## The founding collection

### [The Nimitz Encounter](<https://uap.fun/encounters/nimitz-encounter/>)

Case file 001 · 2004 · Pacific Ocean, USA · Military encounter

In 2004 a Navy cruiser off Southern California sent two Super Hornets after a contact it had tracked for days. The pilots found churning white water and, above it, a smooth white shape like a propane tank. When Cmdr. David Fravor turned to intercept, it mirrored him, vanished in under half a second, and reappeared on radar sixty miles away. What it was doing above that water, nobody has said.

### [Rendlesham Forest](<https://uap.fun/encounters/rendlesham-forest/>)

Case file 002 · 1980 · Suffolk, England · Military encounter

Just after Christmas 1980, U.S. airmen walked into Rendlesham Forest toward lights they took for a crashed plane and came back with three different stories. Two nights later their deputy base commander went in with a cassette recorder, and the tape catches his team reading radiation and watching a beam reach toward them. The skeptics’ answer is a lighthouse. The men who were there still refuse it.

### [The Roswell Incident](<https://uap.fun/encounters/roswell-incident/>)

Case file 003 · 1947 · New Mexico, USA · Crash report

Foil on a sheep ranch, a flying-disc announcement, and a general posing with balloon wreckage. Decades later came stories of unbreakable metal, violet markings, tiny caskets and a guarded hangar. The Air Force identified a secret balloon program as the likely source of the debris; the later accounts of bodies grew into a much larger, fiercely disputed legend.

### [The Washington Flap](<https://uap.fun/encounters/washington-dc-1952/>)

Case file 004 · 1952 · Washington, D.C., USA · Aviation encounter

One July night in 1952, a controller at Washington National saw seven blips where none should be and called his boss over: “Here’s a fleet of flying saucers for you.” For two weekends the targets drifted over the capital, vanished when jets arrived and came back when they left. The Air Force held its biggest press conference in years and blamed the weather. The men at the scopes never believed it.

### [The Tehran Intercept](<https://uap.fun/encounters/tehran-1976/>)

Case file 005 · 1976 · Tehran, Iran · Military encounter

One night in September 1976, a general in Tehran went outside to see the star his callers kept reporting and ordered up a Phantom, which went dead as it closed in. A second F-4 got a radar lock, watched a smaller light come straight at it, and found its weapons panel dead as the pilot reached for a missile. A Pentagon analyst called it a classic. The promised radiation results never came.

### [The Belgian UFO Wave](<https://uap.fun/encounters/belgian-ufo-wave/>)

Case file 006 · 1989–1990 · Belgium · Mass sighting

At dusk on November 29, 1989, two gendarmes outside Eupen found a meadow flooded with light from a dark triangle hanging overhead, three beams pointing down and a red light pulsing at its center. Hundreds of reports followed, until two F-16s chased radar locks that leapt to 970 knots while their pilots saw nothing. The famous photograph was styrofoam and flashlights. The gendarmes never wavered.

### [The Phoenix Lights](<https://uap.fun/encounters/phoenix-lights/>)

Case file 007 · 1997 · Arizona, USA · Mass sighting

One March night in 1997, a silent V of lights drifted down Arizona, too wide for some watchers to cover with a fist. Two hours later a row of amber orbs hung over the Estrella Mountains, and the only footage shows that display. The orbs were flares. A young man with a telescope said the V was airplanes. The governor who mocked it all in an alien costume later said he had seen the craft himself.

### [The Lights Beside Flight 1628](<https://uap.fun/encounters/jal-flight-1628/>)

Case file 008 · 1986 · Alaska, USA · Aviation encounter

Over Alaska in November 1986, the captain of a Japan Air Lines 747 watched two arrays of lights stop in front of his windshield and made out the silhouette of what he called a gigantic spaceship. Anchorage cleared him to turn anywhere he liked. The FAA called the controller’s blip an echo of the jumbo jet, and Jupiter was where the skeptics put it. Jupiter does not stop in front of a windshield.

### [The Westall School Mystery](<https://uap.fun/encounters/westall-1966/>)

Case file 009 · 1966 · Victoria, Australia · Mass sighting

In April 1966 a girl ran down a corridor at Westall High School screaming “flying saucer,” and hundreds of students watched a silver shape hover, dart and drop behind the pines as light aircraft circled it. The headmaster summoned an assembly to call it rot. Today there is no photograph, no pilot and no file, and nobody can say what became of the girl who reached the landing site first.

### [The Socorro Arroyo](<https://uap.fun/encounters/socorro-1964/>)

Case file 010 · 1964 · New Mexico, USA · Close encounter

Chasing a speeder in April 1964, patrolman Lonnie Zamora heard a roar and found a white egg on legs with two small figures beside it, one of which seemed startled to see him. It left in a blast of blue flame. The FBI measured four landing marks, the Air Force filed the case as unsolved, and Zamora was told to keep the red symbol on its hull a secret. Nobody can now say which symbol it was.

### [The Levelland Night](<https://uap.fun/encounters/levelland-1957/>)

Case file 011 · 1957 · Texas, USA · Close encounter

One November night in 1957, a farmhand phoned the Levelland police to say a glowing torpedo had killed his truck’s engine, and the desk officer assumed he was drunk. Within two hours six more drivers reported a glowing egg resting on the highway, engines dying, headlights going dark, and power returning when it rose. The Air Force sent one sergeant for seven hours and called it ball lightning.

### [The Varginha Encounter](<https://uap.fun/encounters/varginha-1996/>)

Case file 012 · 1996 · Minas Gerais, Brazil · Close encounter

In January 1996 three young women crossing a lot in Varginha found something crouched against a wall: oily brown skin and red eyes that turned to look at them. They ran home shouting about the devil. Within weeks the town had an alien and an Army capture. Today the capture story has collapsed into recantations, but the women still reject the Army’s answer: a neighbor they had known for years.

### [The Shag Harbour Lights](<https://uap.fun/encounters/shag-harbour-1967/>)

Case file 013 · 1967 · Nova Scotia, Canada · Crash report

One moonless October night in 1967, a teenager watched four lights slant into the water off Shag Harbour and called in a plane crash. Three Mounties reached the shore to watch a pale light drift on the tide and sink. Fishing boats found a patch of yellow foam; Navy divers found nothing at all. Canada’s own file calls it a UFO, and the legend’s strangest chapter begins at a secret submarine-listening post up the coast.

### [The Lakenheath Radar Night](<https://uap.fun/encounters/lakenheath-bentwaters-1956/>)

Case file 014 · 1956 · Suffolk, England · Military encounter

In August 1956 radar at RAF Bentwaters clocked a return at 4,000 miles an hour. At Lakenheath a target stopped, started and turned at right angles, and the Americans called for a fighter. By their teletype the Venom locked on, and then the target swung in behind it. The RAF crew, found forty years on, remembered a faint blip and nothing else. The record that could settle it is missing.

### [The Disc over O’Hare](<https://uap.fun/encounters/ohare-airport-2006/>)

Case file 015 · 2006 · Illinois, USA · Aviation encounter

One afternoon in 2006, a ramp worker at Gate C17 looked up to see a dark disc hanging just under the overcast. Pilots came out to watch; a United dispatcher phoned the tower about a flying disc, and the controller asked whether United was celebrating Christmas early. Then the disc shot straight up through the cloud and left a clean round hole in Chicago’s sky. The FAA blamed the weather. Not one witness has ever given a name.

### [The Heat Signature over Aguadilla](<https://uap.fun/encounters/aguadilla-2013/>)

Case file 016 · 2013 · Puerto Rico, USA · Aviation encounter

In April 2013 a Customs and Border Protection plane climbing out of Aguadilla swung its infrared camera onto a dark heat signature. For nearly four minutes it seemed to race over rooftops, dive into the Atlantic without a splash, surface, and split in two. The Pentagon later rebuilt the flight path and put a pair of sky lanterns over the airport instead. Everything turns on whether a smudge passed behind a telephone pole.

### [The Fleet Behind the Gimbal](<https://uap.fun/encounters/theodore-roosevelt-gimbal/>)

Case file 017 · 2014–2015 · U.S. East Coast · Military encounter

In 2014 Navy pilots off Virginia began seeing objects on their new radar nearly every day. One described a dark cube inside a clear sphere passing within fifty feet of his jet. In January 2015 an infrared pod caught a dark oblong that seemed to roll on its edge while a voice said, “There’s a whole fleet of them.” Skeptics say the roll belongs to the camera. The radar tapes that showed the fleet have never been released.

### [The Sphere at the Waterline](<https://uap.fun/encounters/uss-omaha-2019/>)

Case file 018 · 2019 · Pacific Ocean, USA · Military encounter

Inside USS Omaha’s darkened combat center one July night in 2019, sailors watched a round infrared signature sink toward a rough black sea. “If it splashes you get a bearing and range,” an officer said. It splashed. A leaked radar clip then widened the mystery into a swarm of tracks hitting 138 knots, the destroyers nearby logged drones for weeks, and Omaha’s own deck logs for those nights do not exist.

### [The Lights over Stephenville](<https://uap.fun/encounters/stephenville-2008/>)

Case file 019 · 2008 · Texas, USA · Mass sighting

One January evening in 2008, a pilot and three friends near Stephenville, Texas, watched silent strobing lights a mile wide rearrange themselves over Highway 67, turn into “dirty burning flames” and go out. Ten minutes later jets roared after them. The Air Force said no fighters were up, then admitted ten F-16s had been training nearby. Then 2.8 million FAA radar returns turned a Texas skywatch into a data war.

### [The Lights that Hunted Colares](<https://uap.fun/encounters/colares-operation-prato/>)

Case file 020 · 1977 · Pará, Brazil · Mass sighting

Night after night, lights came in low over the Amazon estuary. Fishermen abandoned the water, families crowded around bonfires, and patients arrived with burns and tiny marks. Then the Brazilian Air Force came to Colares with cameras, doctors, and a mission named Operação Prato.

### [Two Lost Hours on Route 3](<https://uap.fun/encounters/hill-abduction-1961/>)

Case file 021 · 1961 · New Hampshire, USA · Close encounter

Driving home through the White Mountains in September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill watched a light follow their car until it hung over the road with a row of windows and, Barney said, figures looking back at him. Two hours were gone and both their watches had stopped. Three years later hypnosis gave them the story that invented alien abduction. The psychiatrist who recorded it called it a dream.

### [The Acorn in the Woods](<https://uap.fun/encounters/kecksburg-1965/>)

Case file 022 · 1965 · Pennsylvania, USA · Crash report

One December dusk in 1965, a fireball crossed the Great Lakes and seemed to drop into a ravine outside Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. Police and Air Force men sealed the woods and found nothing. Decades later a volunteer firefighter described a bronze acorn, and neighbors remembered a flatbed truck leaving under a tarpaulin. Astronomers put the fireball’s end over Lake Erie, two hundred miles away.

### [The Night the Sky Waved Back](<https://uap.fun/encounters/father-gill-1959/>)

Case file 023 · 1959 · Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea · Close encounter

In June 1959 the Anglican missionary at Boianai, Papua, watched a bright light sink toward Goodenough Bay and become a platform with four figures working on its upper deck. The next night, when the Rev. William Gill waved, a figure waved back; twenty-five witnesses signed his account, and then everyone went to dinner. Harvard’s Donald Menzel blamed Venus and myopia. Gill was wearing his glasses.

### [The Tape Behind the Door](<https://uap.fun/encounters/pascagoula-1973/>)

Case file 024 · 1973 · Mississippi, USA · Close encounter

In 1973 two men fishing from a Pascagoula pier said a blue light settled over the bayou, three gray figures with pincer hands floated out, carried them inside, and ran a great eye over them. Deputies left them alone with a tape recorder running, expecting the story to collapse. Instead the younger man, alone, began to pray. The tape is why nobody has ever quite dismissed it.

### [Five Days in the Pines](<https://uap.fun/encounters/travis-walton-1975/>)

Case file 025 · 1975 · Arizona, USA · Close encounter

In 1975 six Arizona forestry workers said a blue-green beam from a glowing object knocked their crewmate flat, and they fled. While searchers combed the pines and a sheriff suspected murder, five of the six passed polygraphs. Five days later Travis Walton called from a Heber phone booth, weak and unshaven, talking about huge eyes. His account of the time between is the only one. The crew boss still says nobody saw him taken.

### [The Fire on FM 1485](<https://uap.fun/encounters/cash-landrum-1980/>)

Case file 026 · 1980 · Texas, USA · Close encounter

On a wooded Texas road in December 1980, a blazing shape hung over the pavement, so hot the car’s door handle could not be touched. When it rose, three witnesses counted twenty-three helicopters around it. Within hours Betty Cash was blistering, and soon she lost her hair. No unit ever owned the helicopters, and a federal judge dismissed their suit. She died eighteen years to the day after the encounter.

### [The Green Light over Mansfield](<https://uap.fun/encounters/coyne-helicopter-1973/>)

Case file 027 · 1973 · Ohio, USA · Military encounter

In October 1973 a red light rushed at an Army Reserve Huey over dark Ohio farmland. The crew dived to 1,700 feet; then the light stopped above them and a green beam flooded the cockpit. When the pilot looked back at his panel, the helicopter was climbing at a thousand feet a minute with the collective full down. All four men signed the Army’s form. No radar or tape ever caught the thing.

### [The Lights beside the Newspaper Plane](<https://uap.fun/encounters/kaikoura-lights-1978/>)

Case file 028 · 1978 · South Island, New Zealand · Aviation encounter

In December 1978 Wellington radar asked a freight crew hauling newspapers down the Kaikōura coast to identify a strong return off its wing, and the pilots saw a bright orb. Ten days later a television crew rode the same run and filmed a glowing oval while the controller called out targets “in formation with you.” The government put a jet on standby. Scientists answered with squid boats and a torch shone through the cockpit window.

### [The Last Call over Bass Strait](<https://uap.fun/encounters/valentich-disappearance-1978/>)

Case file 029 · 1978 · Victoria, Australia · Aviation encounter

Alone over Bass Strait at dusk in October 1978, twenty-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich radioed that something with four lights was playing games with his Cessna. “It’s not an aircraft,” he said, then described a long shiny shape with a green light hovering over him. His engine began to cough, and then came seventeen seconds of open microphone, and nothing. The official finding, four years on, was one sentence: cause not determined.

### [The Phantom on the Flatwoods Hill](<https://uap.fun/encounters/flatwoods-monster-1952/>)

Case file 030 · 1952 · West Virginia, USA · Close encounter

In September 1952 boys in Flatwoods watched a fireball drop behind a hill and fetched a beautician, a National Guardsman and a dog. A flashlight beam found two shining eyes, a pointed hood and a towering figure that hissed and glided at them. The Air Force filed a meteor; a skeptic later assembled a barn owl from the details. The monster now has a museum, a festival and its own chairs.

### [The Five Red Lights over Exeter](<https://uap.fun/encounters/exeter-1965/>)

Case file 031 · 1965 · New Hampshire, USA · Close encounter

At two one September morning in 1965, a teenager found five red lights pulsing over a field outside Exeter and dove into a ditch. A skeptical patrolman drove him back; the lights rose over the pines in silence, and he reached for his revolver. The Air Force blamed bombers that had already landed, then filed it as unidentified. The best later guess is a refueling tanker that no flight log has ever put there.

### [The Burning Grid at Falcon Lake](<https://uap.fun/encounters/falcon-lake-1967/>)

Case file 033 · 1967 · Manitoba, Canada · Close encounter

In 1967 a Winnipeg mechanic prospecting for quartz watched a glowing red craft land on the rock and open a door. He called in to the “Yankee boys” he assumed were inside and got only a hum. When he touched the hull his glove melted, and a grid of holes blasted hot gas into his chest. He walked out of the bush with a checkerboard of burns and a story that reached Parliament. Canada still lists the case as unsolved.

### [The Little Men of Kelly](<https://uap.fun/encounters/kelly-hopkinsville-1955/>)

Case file 032 · 1955 · Kentucky, USA · Close encounter

One August night in 1955, a Kentucky farm family said glowing silver figures with huge yellow eyes kept coming to the windows for hours while shotgun blasts only knocked them over and sent them floating back. Eleven people fled to Hopkinsville, and police found a hole in a screen and nothing else. A skeptic later proposed great horned owls. The family never budged: if Mama saw it, it was there.

### [The Landing at Trans-en-Provence](<https://uap.fun/encounters/trans-en-provence-1981/>)

Case file 034 · 1981 · Var, France · Close encounter

In January 1981 a retired mason heard a faint whistle and watched a lead-colored craft drop onto his terrace, rest a few seconds and lift off. Gendarmes photographed a ring in the earth, and France’s space agency spent two years on it: crusted, heated soil, alfalfa drained of chlorophyll, “an event of great magnitude.” Skeptics say the chemistry is tire rubber. The witness thought it was the army’s.

### [The Three-Eyed Giants of Voronezh](<https://uap.fun/encounters/voronezh-1989/>)

Case file 035 · 1989 · Voronezh, USSR (now Russia) · Close encounter

Schoolboys kicking a ball in a Voronezh park said a burgundy sphere bent a poplar, settled on the grass and let out a three-eyed giant in silver overalls with a robot at its heel; one boy froze under its glowing stare, another was made to vanish. Twelve days later TASS told the world that scientists had confirmed it.

### [Nine Objects over Mount Rainier](<https://uap.fun/encounters/mount-rainier-1947/>)

Case file 036 · 1947 · Washington, USA · Aviation encounter

A Boise businessman flying a three-seat mountain plane past Mount Rainier saw a flash, then a chain of nine tailless objects skimming the peaks at a speed he clocked, after rounding down, at twelve hundred miles an hour. Two days later a headline writer called them flying saucers, and the modern UFO era had a name.

### [Sixty-Four Rounds over La Joya](<https://uap.fun/encounters/la-joya-1980/>)

Case file 037 · 1980 · Arequipa, Peru · Military encounter

At morning formation on a Peruvian desert air base, 1,800 men watched a shining ‘balloon’ hang off the end of the runway. A 23-year-old lieutenant was sent up in a Soviet-built Su-22 to shoot it down. He fired sixty-four 30 mm shells into it, chased it to 19,000 metres, and came home with a story the Air Force kept for twenty-two years and a U.S. defence attaché wrote down within weeks.

### [The Ariel School Encounter](<https://uap.fun/encounters/ariel-school-1994/>)

Case file 038 · 1994 · Ruwa, Zimbabwe · Mass sighting

One morning in September 1994, children at Ariel School near Ruwa, Zimbabwe, ran to the tuckshop with news of a strange little man. Their drawings showed a silver object and small figures in tight dark suits with enormous eyes; some said the eyes told them Earth was being harmed. A Harvard psychiatrist flew in to interview them, and one former pupil now says he made it all up. The others stand by what they saw.

### [Utsuro-bune: The Woman in the Hollow Boat](<https://uap.fun/encounters/utsuro-bune-1803/>)

Case file 039 · 1803 · Ibaraki, Japan · Close encounter

In 1803, the story goes, fishermen on the coast of Hitachi towed ashore a round vessel glazed above and banded with iron below. Inside sat a woman nobody could understand, unreadable symbols, and a box she would not let anyone touch. An elder guessed it held her lover’s head. The villagers pushed her back out to sea. The manuscript drawings look uncannily like flying saucers, and new ones keep turning up in Japanese archives.

### [The Spheres in Dechmont Woods](<https://uap.fun/encounters/dechmont-woods-1979/>)

Case file 040 · 1979 · West Lothian, Scotland · Close encounter

One November morning in 1979, a forestry foreman walking his dog in a Livingston plantation met a hovering gray dome and two spiked spheres that rolled up and seized him by the trousers. He woke with no voice and crawled to his truck. Police treated it as an assault, measured forty holes in the grass and sent the trousers to the forensic lab, which found them torn as if pulled upward while worn. Bob Taylor never changed a word.

### [The Silver Threads over Florence](<https://uap.fun/encounters/florence-stadium-1954/>)

Case file 041 · 1954 · Tuscany, Italy · Mass sighting

On a clear Wednesday afternoon, a crowd of ten to twelve thousand at Fiorentina’s midweek practice match stopped watching the ball and pointed at white objects racing past the stadium tower. Across the city, threads like glass wool drifted down onto trees and wires, and a university chemist found boron and silicon in them.

### [The Sky Battle over Nuremberg](<https://uap.fun/encounters/nuremberg-1561/>)

Case file 042 · 1561 · Bavaria, Germany · Mass sighting

At sunrise on April 14, 1561, “many men and women” in Nuremberg watched blood-red and black globes, crosses and tubes pour in and out of the sun, fight for an hour and fall to earth in vapour. A printer’s hand-coloured woodcut preserved the scene; four centuries later, Carl Jung saw “mother-ships” in its tubes.

### [A Tap on the Shoulder in Kōfu](<https://uap.fun/encounters/kofu-1975/>)

Case file 043 · 1975 · Yamanashi, Japan · Close encounter

Two seven-year-olds on roller skates chased an orange light into a bare vineyard and found a silver craft with writing on its hull. A fanged, wrinkle-faced figure came down its steps and tapped one boy twice on the shoulder. Half a century on, local fans mark February 23 as Kōfu UFO Day.

### [The Light over Deception Island](<https://uap.fun/encounters/deception-island-1965/>)

Case file 044 · 1965 · South Shetland Islands, Antarctica · Military encounter

In the dark of the Antarctic winter, sailors, airmen and weathermen at three rival bases in a drowned volcano watched a colored light hover, dart and reverse above Deception Island. Argentina’s Navy announced a solid, lens-shaped flying object; Chile’s Air Force spoke of ten color slides. The slides never surfaced, and the argument over what they saw never ended.

### [The Giants of Gáldar](<https://uap.fun/encounters/canary-islands-1976/>)

Case file 045 · 1976 · Canary Islands, Spain · Mass sighting

One June night in 1976, a light rose over the Atlantic and swelled into a vast transparent sphere watched from one end of the Canaries to the other. Above Gáldar, a country doctor saw it near the ground with two red-suited giants inside. The Air Force filed the light as unidentified and set the giants aside. A missile test was later matched to the light; the clock still does not quite fit.

### [The Night the Pumps Stopped](<https://uap.fun/encounters/kuwait-1978/>)

Case file 046 · 1978 · Kuwait · Close encounter

In November 1978 oil workers in Kuwait’s northern desert said a silent object as big as a jumbo jet settled beside their pumping station. For seven minutes the pumps stopped and the telephones died; when it rose, everything started up again. The sightings went on for two months, and the U.S. ambassador cabled Washington that even the skeptics thought something strange was in Kuwaiti airspace.

### [The Rocket in Lake Kölmjärv](<https://uap.fun/encounters/ghost-rockets-1946/>)

Case file 047 · 1946 · Sweden · Crash report

A year before the flying saucer, Sweden had the ghost rockets: nearly a thousand reports in 1946 of wingless cigars and fireballs, some said to dive into lakes. The most vivid came down one July noon in Lake Kölmjärv in front of a farmer and his maid. The army cordoned the lake and probed the mud for three weeks while London sent officers in civilian clothes. The rocket was never found.

### [Fifteen Minutes at Pampa Lluscuma](<https://uap.fun/encounters/pampa-lluscuma-1977/>)

Case file 048 · 1977 · Arica y Parinacota, Chile · Close encounter

Before dawn on April 25, 1977, eight Chilean soldiers in the Andes watched a violet light come down the hillside toward their campfire. Their corporal walked toward it and vanished. Fifteen minutes later he was back, laughing strangely, with five days of beard and his watch reading the 30th. Decades later he said he had never been abducted. The men who were there stood by what they saw.

### [The Swarm across the Sun](<https://uap.fun/encounters/zacatecas-1883/>)

Case file 049 · 1883 · Zacatecas, Mexico · Mass sighting

In 1883 the director of a new Mexican observatory was drawing sunspots when a small body slid across the Sun, then another, then hundreds. José Bonilla counted 447 and caught one on a glass plate at a hundredth of a second. Paris printed it two years later and guessed birds. Charles Fort called it perhaps the most extraordinary photograph in history; the saucer age called it the first picture of a UFO.

### [The Light in Jeon Mun-wi’s Courtyard](<https://uap.fun/encounters/gangwon-1609/>)

Case file 050 · 1609 · Gangwon, South Korea · Mass sighting

In 1609 five towns in Korea’s Gangwon Province heard thunder out of a clear sky and saw something cross it: a halo, a red streamer, a burning jar, a basin of fire. In Yangyang a round light rose from a gentleman’s courtyard, turned red, became a cloud, split in two and drummed. The royal annals kept it, until a television writer found the entry and built a hit alien love story on it.

### [The Foo Fighters of the Rhine](<https://uap.fun/encounters/foo-fighters-1944/>)

Case file 051 · 1944 · France and Germany · Military encounter

In the last winter of the war, American night-fighter crews hunting over the Rhine came home with a story nobody wanted to hear: balls of red, orange and green fire that fell in beside their wingtips while ground radar swore the sky was empty. They named the lights after a gag in a comic strip. The reports climbed all the way to Eisenhower’s scientists, and the war ended without an answer.

### [The Sign of Shambhala](<https://uap.fun/encounters/roerich-1927/>)

Case file 053 · 1927 · Gansu, China · Mass sighting

In August 1927 Nicholas Roerich’s caravan was building a stupa to Shambhala when someone watching an eagle shouted that there was something far above it. Through field glasses the camp saw a huge shining oval cross the sky and turn. The lamas whispered that it was the sign of Shambhala; Helena Roerich’s diary called it “Our flying apparatus”; the saucer books later claimed it as their own.

### [The Fall on Height 611](<https://uap.fun/encounters/dalnegorsk-1986/>)

Case file 052 · 1986 · Primorsky Krai, USSR (now Russia) · Crash report

In January 1986 a silent reddish ball crossed the Soviet mining town of Dalnegorsk and struck a cliff on Height 611, where it burned for an hour. A biology teacher climbed up and found beads of lead, iron spheres and a black glassy mesh laced with quartz threads, one of them carrying a thread of gold. Dalnegorsk became “Russia’s Roswell.” Skeptics now blame a reconnaissance balloon.

### [The Green Lens over Tananarive](<https://uap.fun/encounters/tananarive-1954/>)

Case file 054 · 1954 · Madagascar · Mass sighting

One winter evening in 1954, as office workers filled the main avenue of Madagascar’s capital, a ball of electric-green light dropped past the Queen’s Palace, then came back low over the rooftops leading what Air France’s technical chief called a silent metallic hull the length of an airliner. A Jesuit astronomer was said to have questioned five thousand witnesses. His report has never been found.

### [The Sun That Danced at Fátima](<https://uap.fun/encounters/fatima-1917/>)

Case file 055 · 1917 · Portugal · Mass sighting

Three shepherd children said a woman of light on a holm oak had promised a sign. On the last appointed day, a crowd of tens of thousands saw the clouds part on a disc of dull silver that could be stared at without pain. It trembled, spun like a firework wheel and seemed to fall toward the earth. The Church called it a miracle. Ufologists later called it the most-witnessed UFO event on record.

### [The Ship in the Air over Clonmacnoise](<https://uap.fun/encounters/clonmacnoise-749/>)

Case file 056 · 749 · County Offaly, Ireland · Mass sighting

Some time in the 740s an Irish annalist wrote a single line: ships with their crews had been seen in the air above Clonmacnoise. Over five centuries the line grew into a legend of a sky-sailor who swims down after a lost spear or a snagged anchor and begins to drown in our heavy air. In 1897 the anchor turned up again in Texas.

### [The Light beside Flight 674](<https://uap.fun/encounters/bariloche-1995/>)

Case file 057 · 1995 · Río Negro, Argentina · Aviation encounter

In 1995, moments after a blackout hit Bariloche, an Aerolíneas Argentinas 727 on approach radioed that an object with two flashing lights was flying formation on its right. “We think it’s a flying saucer.” Then the tape stopped, the airport generator died, and a Gendarmería crew overhead watched a light shoot straight up and wait. The Air Force now blames a nightclub searchlight.

### [The Shooting at Braeside Farm](<https://uap.fun/encounters/fort-beaufort-1972/>)

Case file 058 · 1972 · Eastern Cape, South Africa · Close encounter

In 1972 a farmhand on Braeside farm saw a ball of fire hanging over the bush. By noon the farmer and two policemen had fired some fifteen rifle shots at a dark, shiny object that shied from voices, changed color when hit, and crashed away through the undergrowth leaving nine prints in the clay. A police general said he knew of no law against shooting at invaders from outer space.

### [The Crows Inside the Bus](<https://uap.fun/encounters/emilcin-1978/>)

Case file 059 · 1978 · Lublin, Poland · Close encounter

One damp May morning in 1978 a seventy-year-old Polish farmer driving his mare through the woods gave a lift to two small hitchhikers with green faces. They led him to a white craft as long as a bus, took him up in a little lift, undressed him and passed two plates over his body. On the floor lay a row of live, helpless crows. When he left, he raised his cap, and all four bowed.

### [The Lights of Hessdalen](<https://uap.fun/encounters/hessdalen-1981/>)

Case file 060 · 1981–1985 · Trøndelag, Norway · Mass sighting

In 1981 the farmers of a remote Norwegian valley began to see lights: balls of white and yellow that hung over the fells for an hour or raced away at impossible speed. In 1984 amateur scientists camped in thirty degrees of frost with radar and a laser, and watched a light change its rhythm when they pointed the beam at it. Cameras in the valley still catch lights no one can name.

### [The Saturn over Trindade](<https://uap.fun/encounters/trindade-island-1958/>)

Case file 061 · 1958 · Espírito Santo, Brazil · Military encounter

As a Brazilian Navy ship left a lonely island in the South Atlantic, diver Almiro Baraúna snapped six frames of what he called a flattened disc with a ring around it, like Saturn. The prints reached the President and the front pages. Then it emerged that Baraúna had once shown magazine readers how to fake a flying saucer with two ferry tokens. The negatives have never been independently examined.

### [The Ghost Fliers of Norrland](<https://uap.fun/encounters/ghost-fliers-1934/>)

Case file 064 · 1933–1934 · Sweden · Mass sighting

In the winter of 1933–34, people in northern Sweden began to see an aeroplane that should not have been there: lights racing past a lighthouse in a gale. The Air Force sent ski-equipped Fokkers to hunt the ghost flier; a Norwegian search party climbed a mountain for a crashed plane that turned out to be a stone. Finland’s army concluded that not one of its lights had been an aeroplane at all.

### [Red Lights at Ten O’Clock](<https://uap.fun/encounters/manises-1979/>)

Case file 062 · 1979 · Spain · Aviation encounter

In November 1979 a Spanish charter jet over Ibiza reported two red lights closing from the left. The captain dived for Valencia and landed at Manises, telling control on a tape that survives, “I don’t like continuing with that traffic.” An Air Force Mirage then chased lights over the airport for ninety minutes. The declassified file holds every transcript and no radar track.

### [The Disc on Frame 300](<https://uap.fun/encounters/lake-cote-1971/>)

Case file 063 · 1971 · Alajuela, Costa Rica · Aviation encounter

Nobody saw anything. In 1971 a Costa Rican mapping plane flew over the Arenal volcano, its camera firing on its own. Years later a colleague leaned over frame 300 and asked what the hell that was: a disc on the black water of Lago de Cote, shaded the wrong way for the sun. Jacques Vallée could not explain it; a Lockheed scientist called it a speck on the film. It is either a flaw or a craft two hundred meters wide.

### [The Fire over the Stony Tunguska](<https://uap.fun/encounters/tunguska-1908/>)

Case file 065 · 1908 · Yeniseysk Governorate, Russian Empire (now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia) · Crash report

In 1908 something brighter than the sun burst over the Siberian taiga and laid two thousand square kilometers of forest flat. The meteorite hunter who finally went to look spent the rest of his life draining bogs for an iron that was not there. In 1946 a science-fiction writer proposed a nuclear ship from another world. Science has settled on an asteroid or comet and never found a piece of either.

### [Eleven Lights behind the Left Wing](<https://uap.fun/encounters/campeche-2004/>)

Case file 066 · 2004 · Campeche, Mexico · Military encounter

In March 2004 a Mexican Air Force plane over Campeche swung its infrared camera behind the left wing and counted eleven points of heat in a line beyond the clouds. “No estamos solos,” someone said on the tape. An airline captain soon showed that the camera had been staring at the gas flares of an oil field a hundred miles across the Gulf. A radar target the crew had chased earlier is still unexplained.

### [The Saucer That Joined Mainbrace](<https://uap.fun/encounters/operation-mainbrace-1952/>)

Case file 069 · 1952 · North Yorkshire, England; Bornholm, Denmark; Norwegian Sea · Military encounter

In September 1952 NATO filled the North Sea with ships for Mainbrace, and an uninvited visitor turned up in the reports. Aircrews in Yorkshire saw a silver disc trail a Meteor jet and swing down like a falling sycamore leaf; a photographer on a carrier photographed a round object rising over the flight deck. An RAF officer later said these sightings made the RAF officially recognize the UFO.

### [The Night Drive across the Nullarbor](<https://uap.fun/encounters/mundrabilla-1988/>)

Case file 070 · 1988 · Western Australia, Australia · Close encounter

One January night in 1988, on the Nullarbor, a light like an egg in an egg cup came down the road at a Perth mother and her three sons. By their account it chased the car, landed on the roof, filled the cabin with a grey mist that smelled of death, and dropped them so hard a tire burst. Truckers at the roadhouse found four dents in the roof. A laboratory called the black ash brake dust.

### [The Lady of Light over Zeitoun](<https://uap.fun/encounters/zeitoun-1968/>)

Case file 068 · 1968–1971 · Cairo, Egypt · Mass sighting

After the Six-Day War, Muslim workers at a Cairo bus garage saw a woman in white on the dome of the Coptic church opposite and shouted at her not to jump. For years crowds of tens of thousands watched a glowing figure on the roof and silent luminous “doves” that flew without moving their wings. Church and state both declared it real. Two scientists later tied the lights to earthquakes 400 kilometers away.

### [The Jellyfish over Petrozavodsk](<https://uap.fun/encounters/petrozavodsk-1977/>)

Case file 071 · 1977 · Karelia, USSR (now Russia) · Mass sighting

Before dawn on September 20, 1977, an ambulance crew in Petrozavodsk watched a bright star swell into a glowing, translucent jellyfish over the city. TASS put it on the wire, and the report led straight to a secret thirteen-year Soviet UFO program. The display was a rocket from a cosmodrome the USSR did not admit existed. The round holes that appeared in the city’s windows never fit that answer.

### [The Yellow Spheres of Ladakh](<https://uap.fun/encounters/ladakh-2012/>)

Case file 072 · 2012–2013 · Ladakh, India (then part of Jammu and Kashmir) · Military encounter

In 2012 border police in Ladakh logged more than a hundred yellowish spheres that lifted off the horizon on the Chinese side and drifted for hours. They were raised in Parliament, and at a border meeting where the Chinese side laughed. Then two astronomers had soldiers measure them with a theodolite, and the readings matched Jupiter. The government never said whether it accepted the planet.

### [The Hairy Dwarfs of Venezuela](<https://uap.fun/encounters/venezuela-dwarfs-1954/>)

Case file 073 · 1954 · Venezuela · Close encounter

In November 1954 a delivery man stopped his van outside Caracas because the road ahead had lit up like noon. He said he grappled with a small hairy being and slashed at it with a knife that slid off as if it had struck stone. Within three weeks Venezuela had a wave of hairy dwarfs: hunters fought four of them with a shotgun butt, and a young man was clawed. The dwarfs passed into legend anyway.

### [The Night Los Angeles Shot at the Sky](<https://uap.fun/encounters/battle-of-los-angeles-1942/>)

Case file 074 · 1942 · California, United States · Military encounter

Eleven weeks after Pearl Harbor, sirens woke Los Angeles before dawn, and for an hour the antiaircraft guns fired some 1,430 rounds at something held in a cone of searchlights over the blacked-out city. Witnesses counted anywhere from one plane to two hundred, or a blimp, or nothing at all. Investigators blamed a weather balloon; the lore has grown around a heavily retouched newspaper photograph.

### [The Lavender Field at Valensole](<https://uap.fun/encounters/valensole-1965/>)

Case file 079 · 1965 · Basses-Alpes, France · Close encounter

At a quarter to six on a summer morning, a lavender grower on the plateau above Valensole walked around a pile of stones and found a craft the size of a small car standing on spindly legs in his field, with two child-sized figures bending over his plants. ### [Sixteen Little Men at Aztec](<https://uap.fun/encounters/aztec-1948/>)

Case file 084 · 1948 · New Mexico, United States · Crash report

In 1950 a best-selling book told how government scientists pried open a saucer ninety-nine and ninety-nine hundredths feet across near Aztec, New Mexico, and found sixteen small dead men inside. The story came from a Denver oilman and a Phoenix radio-parts dealer who were selling oil-finding machines, and by 1953 both stood convicted of fraud. Aztec’s crashed saucer refused to stay buried.

### [The Saucer over the Baciu Forest](<https://uap.fun/encounters/cluj-napoca-1968/>)

Case file 083 · 1968 · Cluj, Romania · Close encounter

On a Sunday in August 1968 a technician named Emil Barnea photographed a silvery disc tumbling over the woods at the edge of Cluj, and the Communist state’s own news agency put the pictures in papers across the country. The engineer who championed them told Western readers they were among the best ever taken. But Barnea’s first account, given by telephone in 1968, differed in almost every circumstance from the dramatic picnic scene the West later read, and turned upside down, the second disc looks almost exactly like the first.

### [The Kelso Airship](<https://uap.fun/encounters/kelso-airship-1909/>)

Case file 085 · 1909 · New Zealand · Mass sighting

In the winter of 1909, a light began cruising the hills of South Otago, and a dry farming district decided it was an airship. Then, at noon on a Friday, the children of the Kelso school watched a black boat-shaped thing with a whirling wheel circle their township twice and sail off toward the Blue Mountains. A Dunedin reporter had the witnesses draw it, one by one, and printed six drawings. For six weeks New Zealand saw airships everywhere, blamed a missing German yacht, and finally found starlings.

### [A Fragment from a Flying Disc](<https://uap.fun/encounters/ubatuba-1957/>)

Case file 086 · 1957 · São Paulo, Brazil · Crash report

In September 1957 a Rio gossip columnist printed a letter from an admirer who said a flying disc had exploded over a beach at Ubatuba; folded inside were bits of a metal so light it seemed like paper. A doctor took them to a government lab, which found magnesium with no impurities at all. The pieces went on to the Condon Committee, Dow Chemical, MIT, Stanford and a clean room in Texas. Nobody ever found the man who wrote the letter.

### [The Alderney Lights](<https://uap.fun/encounters/alderney-2007/>)

Case file 090 · 2007 · Alderney, Channel Islands · Aviation encounter

On an April afternoon in 2007 the captain of a yellow Trislander bound for Alderney watched two sharp-edged cigars of golden light hang over the sea for twelve minutes, each with a dark band two-thirds of the way along. His passengers saw them; a pilot descending toward Jersey saw one from the other side; Jersey radar had a lone echo near the Casquets. Four investigators spent 181 pages on it and could not say what it was.

### [PC Alan Godfrey and the Todmorden Encounter](<https://uap.fun/encounters/todmorden-1980/>)

Case file 082 · 1980 · West Yorkshire, England · Close encounter

At about ten past five on a wet November morning in 1980, a Todmorden constable hunting for stray cows saw what he took for a bus, then a spinning, windowed thing as wide as the road, hovering five feet above it. He was sketching it when he found himself a hundred yards farther on, the object gone and minutes missing. Five months earlier he had been among the first officers called to a dead man named Adamski, lying on top of a coal heap.

### [The Lubbock Lights](<https://uap.fun/encounters/lubbock-lights-1951/>)

Case file 081 · 1951 · Texas, United States · Mass sighting

On a summer night in 1951, three Texas Tech professors counting meteors in a Lubbock back yard watched a crescent of glowing “beads” cross the whole sky in about three seconds, and then a second one. For weeks the lights kept coming back, often on something like a schedule. A college freshman photographed a V of them from his back yard, and the Air Force’s own laboratory could neither confirm nor deny the pictures.

### [The Minot B-52 Encounter](<https://uap.fun/encounters/minot-1968/>)

Case file 080 · 1968 · North Dakota, United States · Military encounter

In the small hours of a misty October night, airmen scattered across the nuclear missile fields of North Dakota watched a glowing object pace a truck, circle a silo and split in two. Then a B-52 coming home from a training flight caught something on its radar that jumped two miles in one sweep and sat a mile off its wing, while its radios died in mid-word.

### [The Airship over Sacramento](<https://uap.fun/encounters/mystery-airship-1896/>)

Case file 067 · 1896 · California, United States · Mass sighting

One November evening in 1896, a light came swaying over the rooftops of Sacramento, and streetcar men heard voices above it singing and someone shouting to “lift her up” before she hit a steeple. Within a week a lawyer was describing his client’s machine landing “as lightly as a falling leaf,” and half of California was on its roofs looking at Venus. The inventor was never produced.

### [The Tully Saucer Nests](<https://uap.fun/encounters/tully-1966/>)

Case file 078 · 1966 · Queensland, Australia · Close encounter

One morning in the wettest corner of Australia, a young banana grower heard a hiss like a tyre going flat and saw a grey object, “two saucers face to face,” rise spinning from a lagoon. In the water he found a thirty-foot ring of reeds swirled clockwise, still turning. The papers called it a flying saucer nest, and the name followed it all the way to the cornfields of Hampshire.

### [The Official UFO Night](<https://uap.fun/encounters/brazil-ufo-night-1986/>)

Case file 075 · 1986 · Brazil · Aviation encounter

One moonlit night in 1986, a tower controller in São José dos Campos watched colored lights hang over the city, the founder of Embraer chased them in a twin-prop Xingu, and Brazil scrambled five armed fighters after radar plots that slid onto their tails and vanished when they turned. The Air Force’s confidential report called the phenomena “solid” and credited them with “a certain intelligence.”

### [The Death of Captain Mantell](<https://uap.fun/encounters/mantell-1948/>)

Case file 076 · 1948 · Kentucky, United States · Aviation encounter

One winter afternoon in 1948 the tower at Fort Knox spotted something white hanging in the sky. When four Mustangs passed overhead, the tower asked their leader, Capt. Thomas Mantell, to look. He climbed after it with no oxygen, radioing that it was metallic and huge. His fighter came apart near the town where he was born. The Air Force blamed Venus, then a secret balloon. The case has never quite closed.

### [The Spiral over China](<https://uap.fun/encounters/china-spiral-1981/>)

Case file 077 · 1981 · China · Mass sighting

Late on July 24, 1981, a star over western China began to pulse and became a vast spinning spiral that crossed half the country in under twenty minutes. Peasants saw a dragon coiling in the sky; a cinema crowd forgot the film. Chinese astronomers fought over it in print, two of them taking the same 650-kilometer altitude to opposite conclusions. No launch has ever been matched to it.

A documented report means the report exists. It does not establish an extraterrestrial cause.
