CASE FILE 026 · 1980

Published: September 18, 2026

On a wooded Texas road in December 1980, a blazing shape hung over the pavement, so hot the car’s door handle could not be touched. When it rose, three witnesses counted twenty-three helicopters around it. Within hours Betty Cash was blistering, and soon she lost her hair. No unit ever owned the helicopters, and a federal judge dismissed their suit. She died eighteen years to the day after the encounter.

## The story

### A Monday-night search for bingo

On December 29, 1980, Betty Cash drove her friend Vickie Landrum and Vickie’s grandson Colby, a month short of his seventh birthday, out from Dayton in a 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Holiday confusion had sent them first toward Cleveland and then New Caney looking for a bingo game; finding none, they ate at a truck-stop restaurant near U.S. 59 and FM 1485. In the account Cash gave Air Force claims officers eight months later, they started home around 8:30 p.m. and had gone perhaps twelve miles when a light beyond the pines stopped looking like ordinary traffic in the sky.

### The road fills with fire

At roughly 9:00 to 9:30 p.m., on a narrow wooded stretch between New Caney and Huffman, the light appeared to settle over the road at treetop height. Cash stopped in the road. The three later described a brilliant mass larger than the car, with fire or a cone of light pulsing from below. “Fire would shoot out of it and then it would let up,” Cash told the Air Force; the sound was “similar to air brakes… a whooshing sound.” Each pulse seemed to lift it; between pulses it sagged toward the road. The famous upright-diamond outline became clearest in later drawings, including the one Betty made for the Air Force that August. In the earliest Project VISIT notes the adults stressed that the glare defeated detail, and Colby, asked at Bergstrom, said only, “I don’t know what it was, but all I know is it was some kind of object,” and that it was “kinda yellowish-red.”

### The hand on the door

Vickie partly left the passenger side, then returned to hold the frightened boy. Her frame for the impossible scene was immediate. “I was telling him to look right inside,” she said; “if he saw a big man it’d be Jesus.” She got out for a few minutes and burned her arm on the roof of the car. Cash walked toward the front of the Oldsmobile and remained outside longest. “The lights were so bright, and the heat was so intense, I got out of the car,” she said. “I don’t know what my purpose was unless it was just normal instinct to think well, maybe I’d be safer outside than I would be inside. But tell you the truth, we thought the end of the world was coming.” Getting back in was the problem: “the door handle was so hot I couldn’t stand it with my bare hand, so I got the pocket of my leather jacket to open the car door.” Inside, “it was so hot I had to turn on the air conditioning in order for us to get cool.” It was at Bergstrom, too, that Cash said Vickie’s fingerprints were still in her dashboard, that the plastic had melted under her hands. The claim is absent from the field notes taken in February, and nobody with instruments ever examined the car.

### Twenty-three machines in the glow

As the luminous object rose and moved away, the witnesses reported helicopters converging around it. Farther down the road they stopped again and counted moving silhouettes. “I counted twenty three,” Cash said. “They had ‘United States Air Force.’” Vickie’s count was twenty-six. “Who knows?” Cash said. “We were all so sick and burning and hot and scared… that I don’t say that we didn’t vary.” Vickie was careful about the markings: “I didn’t see no sign… no name on them or nothing.” The first investigators’ notes record two kinds of machine, one large and smooth-running with a single big rotor and one with two rotors, which is how Army CH-47 Chinooks entered the story. The whole thing, Cash reckoned, took “about 15 to 16, 17 minutes, it seemed like hours to me, but it couldn’t have been that long because when I got home it was ten minutes till ten.” The swarm remains the hinge of the legend: too large to forget, yet never tied to a flight log or unit.

### The burning followed them home

Cash dropped Vickie and Colby in Dayton before 10 p.m. “I was sick within 30 minutes after the time it happened,” she said, “burning up, I was just like I had been blistered all over, like I had been laying on a beach.” By the time she got home: “blisters all over my head, my face, my back, my neck, I was burning… from the inside out.” Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and swelling followed, then patchy hair loss. Her condition worsened until she entered Parkway Hospital in Houston as a burn patient. The hospital records Schuessler later obtained put that stay at January 2 to 19, with a second from January 25 to February 9; Cash remembered “a month, maybe a little bit longer,” and other accounts give January 3 and twelve days. Vickie’s eyes felt “just like they’ve got sand in them,” and Colby, she said, “was like a little baby for over a month.” The boy himself, asked what he had felt: “I didn’t feel nothing until I got up the next morning.” The suffering and hospital treatment are central facts of their subsequent lives; the diagnosis is not. Early physicians did not receive the UFO story immediately, complete records have never been published, and later specialists disagreed sharply over radiation.

### A report that began a month late

No police report fixed the scene that night. The witnesses said embarrassment and fear of ridicule kept the story close while Cash was ill. Near the end of January, Vickie told Dayton police chief Tommy Waring; on February 2 she reached the National UFO Reporting Center, and the account moved through APRO and tabloid coverage. McDonnell Douglas engineer and MUFON deputy director John Schuessler learned of it from a Conroe Courier reporter on February 20. He interviewed Cash on February 22 and Vickie and Colby on February 28, about eight weeks after the event. His Project VISIT file became the narrative’s backbone, and part of its value is what it lacks: the melted dashboard, the repaved road and the other later embellishments are not in it.

### A patrolman, an oil-field worker and a V of searchlights

The helicopters found other witnesses, though none on the night. Dayton patrolman L. L. “Lamar” Walker and his wife Marie later said they had seen a group of military helicopters near Huffman that evening—a dozen Chinook types by the account Schuessler recorded in May 1982, a half-dozen in V formation with searchlights by the version the Houston Chronicle printed in 1991—some hours after the encounter. Jerry McDonald, a twenty-three-year-old oil-field worker and a friend of Walker’s, heard a radio appeal for witnesses in March 1981 and told an investigator that on the same night he had heard “a sound like a rumble, and I thought it was the Goodyear blimp,” then seen something “kind of triangular or diamond-shaped” with “two twin torches that were shooting brilliant blue flames out of the back.” A bakery clerk, Belle Magee, reported a light “like a football field but up in the sky” heading north toward New Caney. None of them saw the three witnesses or the Cutlass, and all came forward after the appeal. They are the closest the case has to corroboration, and exactly as strong as a memory prompted by a radio call.

### The map that would not hold still

Investigators never established a pristine scene. Vickie led Schuessler and Alan Holt along FM 1485, where their notes record three viewing locations but no trace. At Bergstrom the adults could not place the event on the available map and disagreed over the county. In September, Texas radiation official Charles R. Meyer searched the general roadway because the exact spot remained uncertain. That looseness matters: later stories described scorched pavement secretly removed by the government, but the early field report says nothing was observed; Schuessler told the Chronicle the stretch was resurfaced about a year later, and the county said it knew nothing about it.

### Claims officers, soil samples and an Army search

Letters to Senators Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower led Cash and the Landrums to Bergstrom Air Force Base on August 17, 1981. Three claims officials taped their testimony, supplied damage forms and explained that Blue Book had closed. A base follow-up found no radar, tower, pilot or airport report of a brilliant twenty-minute event near Houston air traffic. Texas health officials found no residual radiation in road and soil checks that September and offered to review the medical evidence, an offer their file says went no further. In 1982 Army inspector Lt. Col. George Sarran checked units flying similar helicopters, the Marine Corps and the oil-company fleets. He regarded the witnesses as sincere but found no aircraft to connect to them.

### Three Texans versus the United States

Attorney Peter Gersten turned the helicopter claim into a Federal Tort Claims Act case. Administrative demands sought $10 million for Cash and $5 million each for Vickie and Colby; after the Air Force denied them, the witnesses sued. Agency declarations said the Army, Navy, Air Force and NASA possessed no aircraft matching the fiery object, while no evidence placed federal helicopters over FM 1485. In September 1985 Vickie told a reporter, “I’ve waited four years and suffered no end,” and an assistant U.S. attorney gave the government’s whole case in a sentence: “You can’t hold the government liable for actions it doesn’t control.” On August 21, 1986, Judge Ross N. Sterling dismissed the suit without trial. The dismissal did not decide what the family experienced or what caused the illnesses. It decided that suspicion, recognizable silhouettes and official denials did not prove that a federal employee or machine caused compensable harm.

### The case that hurts whichever way it turns

Cash–Landrum survived because its pieces resist a comfortable arrangement. A child and two adults repeatedly described a terrifying light, unbearable heat and a sky busy with rotors; Cash’s illness gave the story stakes far beyond an anonymous light report. Yet no prompt report secured the road or car, the exact location drifted, outside corroboration arrived late, the alleged fleet left no operational record, and the proposed ionizing dose does not fit the witnesses’ survival. The result is neither a proven secret vehicle nor a cleanly solved mistake, but a human claim of injury trapped between medical uncertainty and an absent owner.

### Eighteen years to the day

Betty Cash died in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 29, 1998, eighteen years to the day after the encounter, at sixty-nine; she had spent much of the interval bedridden or in hospital and had never been told what had burned her. Vickie Landrum died in Liberty, Texas, in September 2007 at eighty-three. Colby, who at seventeen wrote in a journal that he still looked up when he went outside—“I guess it is just a habit, but I always wonder what is up there. Lots of nights I lay awake wondering if other kids have gone through what I have”—is the last of the three.

## The evidence

### Testimony and its moving details

The three principal witnesses consistently retained the core sequence: bright object over a wooded road, pulsing fire and heat, departure with many helicopters, then illness. Their August 1981 taped Air Force interview is unusually valuable direct testimony. The record also preserves friction: who first saw the light, whether the engine stopped by itself, when helicopters appeared, their number and markings, and how clearly the object’s shape could be seen. Those changes do not prove invention, but they prevent later polished versions from being treated as a single contemporaneous statement.

### Medical effects are documented; radiation is not

Cash was hospitalized and photographs showed hair loss and damaged skin; the witnesses repeatedly reported a severity gradient matching their claimed exposure. Radiologist Peter Rank interpreted parts of the record as superficial radiation injury, while later physicians repeated a radiation diagnosis. Internist Gary Posner argues that rapid vomiting plus systemic acute-radiation symptoms would imply a penetrating and likely lethal dose, while the records also mention a biopsy diagnosis of alopecia areata and serious pre-existing health problems. No dosimeter, biopsy uniquely diagnostic of radiation, contaminated sample or complete public medical file establishes the agent.

### Helicopters, absent traces and conventional proposals

Sarran’s search and the witnesses’ ability to describe tandem rotors make the helicopters more than a decorative detail, but neither sincerity nor aircraft recognition supplies ownership. A formation of more than twenty heavy helicopters near a major airport should have required crews, fuel, maintenance and conspicuous noise; official checks found none. Texas tests months later found no residual radiation, early investigators recorded no pavement damage, and no authenticated trace from the Cutlass was preserved. Proposals have included a classified aircraft accident, a chemical agent, ordinary illness, hoax and ball lightning; each explains fragments, none reproduces the complete account with independent evidence.

### Classification

This archive classifies the report as CE2 for claimed physiological and vehicle effects, not as a confirmed radiation event. Its status is unresolved, with both a military connection and ionizing-radiation cause unproven.
