In 2012 border police in Ladakh logged more than a hundred yellowish spheres that lifted off the horizon on the Chinese side and drifted for hours. They were raised in Parliament, and at a border meeting where the Chinese side laughed. Then two astronomers had soldiers measure them with a theodolite, and the readings matched Jupiter. The government never said whether it accepted the planet.

## The story

### A lake on the frontier

Pangong Tso is a ribbon of brackish water about 134 kilometers long (160 by India Today’s count) and no more than about five wide, lying at about 4,300 meters in the Changthang plateau of eastern Ladakh. Its western third is held by India and the rest by China, and somewhere in the water runs the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the unmarked boundary the two armies have watched each other across since the war of 1962. Neither side agrees where exactly it lies. In a written answer to Parliament in December 2012 India’s defense minister, A. K. Antony, stated plainly that “there is no commonly delineated ‘Line of Actual Control’” and that each side patrols up to its own idea of it. India Today described Ladakh that autumn as a barren, heavily militarized zone wedged between Pakistan-held Kashmir and the Chinese-held Aksai Chin. Watching that line is the job of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the ITBP, a paramilitary force whose posts sit on the ridges and plains along the south shore of the lake, backed by the Army’s 14 Corps at Leh. Sentries on the high posts spend their nights looking east, toward China, through thin, exceptionally clear air.

### Lights that came before

The soldiers of 2012 were not the first on this frontier to report lights in the sky. According to The Himalayan Times, a CIA information report disseminated on April 11, 1968, and released in 2001, listed seven sightings between February 19 and March 25 of that year “from South Ladakh to Bhutan,” including a blazing object that disintegrated with a thunderclap over the Kaski region of Nepal and a metallic disc said to have been found in a crater near Pokhara. The Hindi daily Patrika, describing the same report in 2026, names Chang La, Phukche and Koyul in Ladakh among the places. India Today’s report of November 2012 recorded that in late 2003 the Army’s 14 Corps had sent Army headquarters a detailed report on luminous objects seen floating on the Chinese side by troops on posts along Siachen; when the subject came up at a Northern Command presentation in Leh, the army chief, General N. C. Vij, “angrily dismissed the reports as hallucinations.” In 2010, the same magazine said, the Indian Air Force investigated further Army sightings and dismissed them as Chinese lanterns. Reporting lights, the magazine noted, “risks inviting ridicule.”

### Over a hundred sightings

The new reports began on August 1, 2012. Between then and October 15, India Today reported that November, an ITBP unit based at Thakung, close to the lake, logged more than a hundred sightings of what its reports called “Unidentified Luminous Objects,” by day and by night. “The yellowish spheres appear to lift off from the horizon on the Chinese side and slowly traverse the sky for three to five hours before disappearing,” the magazine’s defense writer, Sandeep Unnithan, summarized. The unit sent reports to ITBP headquarters in Delhi in September and to the Prime Minister’s Office; according to a later Press Trust of India report, the ITBP wrote to the government in October about “orange-yellow luminous flying objects” on the horizon over the lake and alerted 14 Corps, which passed the matter to Northern Command at Udhampur. The ITBP took photographs. Army officials who studied them, India Today said, concluded that the objects in the “hazy photographs” were not drones, unmanned aircraft or satellites in low orbit. No one has published the pictures.

### Drones, and something else

The Army was already counting Chinese aircraft. India Today reported 99 sightings of Chinese drones between January and August 2012, 62 in Ladakh and 37 in Arunachal Pradesh, three of which had crossed into territory India claims; those were verified and logged separately from the spheres. Against that background the lights worried 14 Corps. The Army moved a mobile ground radar and a spectrum analyzer, an instrument that listens for transmissions across the radio bands, to a mountaintop near the lake in September. The radar could not see the object the soldiers were tracking by eye, which India Today took as a sign it was non-metallic, and the analyzer picked up no signals from it. The Army flew a reconnaissance drone toward one of the lights; it “reached its maximum altitude but lost sight of the floating object.” Experts from the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), India’s technical intelligence agency, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the defense ministry’s research arm, could not identify the objects either. “Something is clearly wrong, if our combined scientific resources can’t explain the phenomena,” a senior Army official in Delhi told the magazine.

### Astronomers from Hanle

The most surprising line in Unnithan’s report concerned the astronomers. Late in September, it said, a team from the Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle, run by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and, by the reports’ reckoning, about 150 kilometers to the south, watched the phenomena for three days. According to the Army officials India Today spoke to, the astronomers saw the objects but could not establish what they were, and said they were “non celestial,” ruling out meteors and planets. No statement from the observatory itself was quoted. Intelligence officials, the magazine said, had two theories of their own: a crude psychological operation by China, or sophisticated probes testing India’s defenses in Ladakh. A retired chief of the Air Force, Air Chief Marshal P. V. Naik, said, “We can’t ignore these sightings.” The Pune astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar told the magazine that the idea of alien craft was “fancy, not fact.” Unnithan ended his article by retelling the Samudra Tapu robot of 2004 as “the clearest UFO sighting yet,” and the two stories have traveled together ever since.

### The snow man is coming

The robot Unnithan retold had appeared eight years earlier, just south of Ladakh. On the morning of September 27, 2004, a glacier-survey party from the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad was camped in the Samudra Tapu valley in Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, a long trek from the sacred lake of Chandratal. Around 6:45 a.m., by Ramesh Vinayak’s account in India Today, a porter screamed, “Sir, the snow man is coming.” The team leader, the glaciologist Anil V. Kulkarni, told the Hindustan Times five days later that a bright white object moved down the hillside toward the camp: “It was about 3 to 4 feet tall and balloons were attached to its head. One was red and the rest were white. It had what looked like two legs and looked as if it was floating a few inches above the ground.” The geologist Sunil Dhar remembered it “walking, planting and pacing its steps like a human being.” When the porters shouted it retreated, turned black as it met the sunlight, rose steeply along the ridge, turned white again, hovered over the camp and dwindled to a dot in the sky. Kulkarni ruled out a weather balloon, partly because it moved “in a direction different to that of the prevailing wind.” The scientists took photographs, and Vinayak, who saw them, wrote that the object looked “like a bunch of balloons caught in a mountain draft”; Kulkarni and Dhar, for their part, had written to robotics laboratories in the United States, Germany and Sweden. The retellings never agreed on the details: about 14,000 or 17,000 feet; three-to-four-minute phases or a forty-minute encounter; photographs or film; a five-member team, “all 11 members of the expedition,” or, by 2012, “14 persons including the six scientists.”

### Tennis balls with flash lights

The story spread fast. The Hindustan Times and Kashmir Life rewrote it on November 2 and 3, India Today’s website, citing “a national daily,” said the sightings had “flummoxed the DRDO, NTRO, ITBP,” and The Register in London ran it under a headline about “robot-bringing UFOs.” On November 19 Saurabh Shukla of Mail Today, who said he had seen reports from the Intelligence Bureau, the Army and the ITBP, added new details. Officials were now describing the objects as “tennis ball-sized,” and “over 150 such incidents” had been reported in three months. One had been reported on October 19 at Dichu in Arunachal Pradesh, at the other end of the frontier, and at Thakung post on October 21 another had been seen for around eight hours with an “intense continuous flash light.” The theory that China was flying remote-controlled lanterns, Shukla wrote, had been “shot down after an internal probe”; some officials suspected high-intensity cameras. “We are worried that there may be a flare-up if the Indian troops decide to shoot these objects,” one source told him.

### On the agenda with China

Mail Today reported that the lights had been discussed at a high-level meeting on China in the Prime Minister’s Office, that India’s protests at local border personnel meetings had met with “a cursory denial,” and that the “luminous objects” would be at the center of a meeting of the boundary coordination mechanism later that month, with Gautam Bambawale, head of the China desk at the Ministry of External Affairs, leading the Indian side. “Earlier these reports coming from various sectors of the boundary were sketchy but now we have definite proof of these yellowish spheres coming from the Chinese side,” a source said. Whether the lights were raised in that forum is not on the public record. The following August, though, India Today’s Glass House column quoted an Indian official as saying that when the UFO issue was raised at a border meeting in 2012, the Chinese “laughed uncontrollably.”

### No conclusive proof

Parliament asked twice. On November 26, 2012, the Lok Sabha member Mangani Lal Mandal put a written question to the defense minister: had 14 Corps reported a mysterious UFO over the India-China border in the last three years, what had the government done, and was there a difference between UFOs and unmanned aircraft “which go undetected on radars” and which NTRO and DRDO teams had been unable to reach any conclusion about? Antony answered all four parts together: “There is no conclusive proof of UFO flying over Indo-China border.” He added that the government was monitoring all developments in the neighborhood with a bearing on national security. On December 12 the member Dr. T. N. Seema asked in the Rajya Sabha whether troops had reported UFOs in Ladakh and whether talks had been opened with China. Antony gave essentially the same first sentence, “There is no conclusive proof of Unidentified Flying Objects flying over India-China border,” and moved straight on to the disputed boundary and the mechanisms for handling transgressions.

### Chinese lanterns, and a gunshot not fired

On December 16 the Press Trust of India, citing official sources in Leh and New Delhi, reported a provisional answer. Scientists from several organizations, consulting the Air Force, whose radars had also picked up nothing, had concluded that the objects were Chinese lanterns, the paper sky lanterns lifted by a small flame, and a team from ISRO was to be sent to Leh to confirm it. The same dispatch said a proposal to shoot one of the objects down had been turned down by the government, because the region “had last heard a gun shot only on October 29, 1962,” during the war with China. It said the lights were now visible again in the evening and at night, after a spell when they had appeared in the small hours, and that experts from the Hanle observatory had found that they disappeared in 12 to 18 minutes. Intelligence agencies, the dispatch added, still suspected a psychological operation by the Chinese army. No result from an ISRO visit has been published.

### The lance naik at Point 4715

The Army then asked the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore for help, and early in 2013 the institute sent two astronomers to Ladakh. “Our task was to determine whether these unidentified objects were celestial or terrestrial,” one of them, the senior astronomer Tushar Prabhu, later told The Telegraph. According to The Telegraph’s sources, Army personnel had documented 329 sightings over Thakung by February 2013, and the objects were perceived to have crossed the Line of Actual Control 155 times. Two objects mattered. The first, watched from Point 4715, an observation post about 4,715 meters up near Thakung, appeared on the horizon at about 6 p.m. and stayed in view until about 5 a.m.; the second appeared at 4 a.m. and faded at 11 a.m. The most useful witness was Sheminderpal Singh, a lance naik (a junior non-commissioned rank) who kept regular watch at the post. He told the astronomers that one of the objects appeared four minutes later each day, that it seemed to be the brightest light in the sky, and that it always appeared to move with respect to the stars.

### By Jupiter

The astronomers asked the Army to measure the objects with a theodolite, a surveyor’s instrument that records a target’s bearing and elevation. Soldiers took the readings from February 17 to 22, 2013, and sent them to Bangalore. The positions coincided with Jupiter’s nightly path across the sky, and the astronomers concluded that the object over Point 4715 was the planet; the description of the early-morning object “suggests that it is Venus.” At that altitude, they explained, the air is so transparent that stars and planets look unusually bright, and Jupiter and Venus were the brightest planets in the sky. They added that “objects that rise in the east may appear to be moving across the LAC and approaching the Indian side.” G. S. Mudur broke the result on the front page of The Telegraph of Calcutta on July 24, 2013, under the headline “By Jupiter! China spy in sky,” beginning: “Phew! Science has saved a Roman god and a goddess from possible Armageddon.” The Register, Gizmodo and the astronomer Phil Plait, who checked the sky himself and found that “the observations do seem to fit,” passed the story around the world. India Today reported “red faces in South Block,” the government building that houses the defense and external affairs ministries.

On August 4, 2013, troops in the Lagan Khel area of Demchok, on the Ladakh frontier south-east of Pangong, saw a UFO in the evening, and the local formation reported it to Army headquarters. The Press Trust of India, which carried the news two weeks later, recalled the more than one hundred earlier sightings and Antony’s answer to Parliament, and noted the research institute’s finding about Jupiter and Venus, adding that “it is not clear whether the conclusion arrived at by the research institute has been accepted by the Army and Government or not.” No government statement accepting or rejecting it has been published since. The whole affair played out amid real tension on the frontier: in April 2013 Chinese troops had camped deep inside Indian-claimed territory in a standoff in northern Ladakh, and The Telegraph noted that more than 500 transgressions had been reported between 2010 and 2012.

### The base under Kongka La

The lights also inherited a legend. On January 9, 2005, a website called IndiaDaily.com published an unsigned article claiming that “China and India both know about underground UFO base in the Himalayan border area.” Its site was Kongka La, a pass on the disputed boundary north-east of Pangong where, it said, the two countries do not patrol “by agreement.” Hindu pilgrims bound for Mount Kailash had seen lights, and their guides told them it was normal; “strange lighted triangular silent crafts show up from underground and moves almost vertically up.” Chinese guards, then Indian ones, turned the curious pilgrims back, and Indian border personnel supposedly confirmed that “strange objects come out from under the ground with amplified and modulated lights.” The double-thick crust where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide, the article explained, allowed bases to be dug very deep. In February 2013, while the Pangong lights were in the news, India TV republished the text nearly word for word and added a new twist: that in June 2006 Google Earth had revealed a 1:500 scale model of the area on the Chinese side of the border, surrounded by buildings like a military base. The copies have multiplied on travel and mystery sites ever since.

### A model, a memorial and a buffer zone

The real places behind the legend have stories of their own. The scale model is real, but it is not on the border. In 2006 a Google Earth user found a detailed terrain model, roughly 900 by 700 meters, at Huangyangtan near Yinchuan in Ningxia, deep inside China and thousands of kilometers from Ladakh; it reproduced a large stretch of Aksai Chin, and local officials told the Australian press it had been there for years and was used to train tank drivers. The border is no empty no-man’s-land either. The Kongka Pass was the scene of one of the first deadly clashes between the two countries: on October 21, 1959, an Indian police party under Karam Singh ran into Chinese troops on a hill near Hot Springs, ten Indian policemen died and others were taken prisoner. India observes October 21 as Police Commemoration Day, and every year police from around the country make the trek to the memorial at Hot Springs, a post now manned by the ITBP, the same force that watched the Pangong lights. Both sides keep posts within a few kilometers of the pass.

## The evidence

### What survives

Nothing from the military record has been published: not the ITBP reports, the radar and spectrum-analyzer results, the Hanle team’s observations, the NTRO and DRDO findings, the photographs, nor the Indian Institute of Astrophysics report built on the February 2013 theodolite readings. Everything rests on journalism that quoted those documents through unnamed officials: Unnithan’s India Today article of November 2012, Shukla’s Mail Today follow-up, the Press Trust of India dispatches of December 2012 and August 2013, and Mudur’s Telegraph article of July 2013, the only one to name anyone involved in the observations of 2012 and 2013. The two parliamentary answers are the only primary documents from 2012, and they say almost nothing. For the Samudra Tapu sighting of 2004 there are Kulkarni’s interview with the Hindustan Times and Vinayak’s 2006 India Today feature; India Today has run at least one of the team’s photographs, captioned as a “robot-like airborne figure,” but the full set and the Space Applications Centre report Vinayak cites have not surfaced. India Today said a written reply in Parliament in 2005 by the minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the ISRO report, but that answer has not been found.

### The contradictions

The count grows from story to story: more than 100 sightings between August 1 and October 15 (India Today, November 2012); more than 150 in three months (Mail Today); 329 by February 2013, with 155 crossings of the Line of Actual Control (The Telegraph); about 300 between August 2012 and January 2013 (India Today, August 2013). The objects are yellowish in one report and orange-yellow in another; they last three to five hours, eight hours, or 12 to 18 minutes. The sharpest contradiction concerns the astronomers. In November 2012 Army officials said the Hanle team had called the objects “non celestial” and ruled out planets, and in December the Press Trust of India said the same observatory’s experts had timed them disappearing in 12 to 18 minutes. In July 2013 The Telegraph reported that the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, which runs Hanle, had identified Jupiter and Venus. Perhaps the earlier accounts garbled what the astronomers said on their way through the Army; perhaps the institute changed its view once it had measurements. The explanations offered in public changed too: Chinese drones and psychological operations, then lanterns (rejected in November, preferred in December), then planets.

### Checking the sky

By this archive’s calculation for Thakung, the planets fit most of the reports. In August 2012 Jupiter, at magnitude about −2, rose in the east-north-east around 1 a.m. Indian time, and Venus, at about −4.3 and the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon, followed around 2:15 a.m. from nearly the same direction. That is toward the north shore of the lake and the Chinese-held territory beyond it. Both then climbed for three or four hours until dawn, close to Unnithan’s “three to five hours.” Through the autumn Jupiter rose about four minutes earlier each night (the Telegraph’s “delay of four minutes” has the right size but the opposite sign), by 9:30 p.m. in October and before sunset by mid-December. Around the turn of the year it was in view from dusk to about 5 a.m., the first object’s hours. Venus rose around 4 a.m. in late October and early November and, at its brilliance and in thin air, can stay visible well after sunrise, matching the object seen from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the daytime sightings. By the time of the theodolite readings in February, though, Venus rose only some 15 to 20 minutes before the Sun and was lost in its glare, so the morning object belongs to the autumn. The reports that fit least are the lights gone in 12 to 18 minutes and the “tennis ball-sized” objects; even the eight-hour “intense continuous flash light” of October 21 matches the hours Jupiter was above the horizon that night.

### Why it lasted

The case shows how a frontier makes a mystery. The sentries were doing exactly what they were posted to do, watching a disputed horizon for intruders, in a year when the Army really was logging Chinese drones; a light that rose from China and crept toward India every night was, to them, a light that crossed the line. Each layer of the response, from radar, spectrum analyzer and drone to national agencies, Parliament and a meeting with China, was reported as another failure to explain rather than as a reason to look at the sky, and it took the patient notes of one lance naik and a surveyor’s theodolite to settle it. The older tales gave the lights a past. The robot of Samudra Tapu, still unexplained on the word of the scientists who saw it, and the base under Kongka La, a 2005 internet story built on a real battlefield and a real scale model, were folded into the coverage of 2012 and 2013 and are still repeated with it.

### Classification and evidence note

This archive files the Pangong lights as a military encounter because the reports came from border troops and drew in the Army, national technical agencies and Parliament. No close-encounter class applies, since the objects were only ever distant lights. The resolution is partly explained: the Indian Institute of Astrophysics matched the main object to Jupiter from the soldiers’ theodolite readings and, more tentatively, the morning object to Venus from its description, and the timing of the reports supports that. The underlying documents remain unpublished, the government never said whether it accepted the finding, and several of the reported details, among them the short-lived lights, the “tennis ball-sized” objects and the Demchok sighting of 2013, were never tied to the planets. The Samudra Tapu sighting of 2004 is a separate, unexplained report.
