Published: September 16, 2026 · Updated: September 17, 2026

In April 1966 a girl ran down a corridor at Westall High School screaming “flying saucer,” and hundreds of students watched a silver shape hover, dart and drop behind the pines as light aircraft circled it. The headmaster summoned an assembly to call it rot. Today there is no photograph, no pilot and no file, and nobody can say what became of the girl who reached the landing site first.

## The story

### A cry from the corridor

On the morning of Wednesday, April 6, 1966—the second-last day of term, two days before Good Friday—a girl burst into Andrew Greenwood’s science class at Westall High School in Clayton South with news of a flying saucer outside. Greenwood did not let the class go. When the recess bell rang a few minutes later he walked out to find most of the school already on the oval, faces turned up. Sixty years afterward a former student named Tania Vassie told the ABC that she had been a girl running down the corridor that morning, screaming the words “flying saucer.” When exactly it began is the first of Westall’s many disagreements: a sighting form filled in the next day says 10:20 a.m., and people who have listened to Greenwood’s taped account hear him say both a quarter past ten and a quarter past eleven.

### Silver against blue-grey

Twelve-year-old Joy Tighe wrote hers down the following day on a form from the Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society: “Circular 2 UFOs flying in varying directions,” silver, “Round on top Flat on bottom,” with a “Whirring noise,” in view for fifteen minutes. She drew a dome. Marilyn Eastwood described a round thing with a hump on top and round things underneath. Greenwood, arriving late, saw something subtler. “Like a thin beam of light, about half the length of a light aircraft,” he told the Dandenong Journal. “It was silvery-grey and seemed to ‘thicken’ at times.” A year later he compared it to a finger or cigar with a bulge, gray on blue-gray, 500 to 1,000 yards off and completely silent—hard to find until someone pointed, like a plate that kept turning edge-on. Victor Zakruzny, a student, remembered two discs about three meters apart.

### The oval fills

Classes simply emptied. Students climbed the fence; some cried, convinced the world was ending; the woodwork teacher, Gerry Shepherd, later said that Westall High School as a teaching institution had ceased. Greenwood put the crowd at three hundred. Some counted one object, some two or three. Some heard the whirring; Greenwood, in the thick of the noise on the oval, heard nothing from the sky at all.

### Planes enter the story

Then the light aircraft arrived—first one, Greenwood said, then as many as five, circling the silver thing as it hovered, darted off, and reappeared somewhere else. He reached for the same phrase in 1966 and 1967: “cat and mouse.” In the newspaper it is the planes toying with the object; on tape, the object toying with the planes. The Dandenong Journal’s front page a fortnight later asked, “Who were 5 pilots?” Nearby Moorabbin Airport said it had nobody up. The Age reported that no commercial, private, or RAAF pilot had mentioned anything unusual. The one flier the Journal tracked down, Bob Ford of Thornbury, had been somewhere in the area and noticed nothing. Greenwood was unmoved: “We saw them, all right… 300 of us.”

### A race toward The Grange

When the object dropped behind a line of pines to the south, dozens of students went over the fence after it, across the paddocks toward the pines and long grass of a place called The Grange. The ones who ran fastest tell the story Westall is famous for: a saucer low over the grass or sitting in it, then tilting on edge and leaving straight up, faster than anything they had seen. Greenwood, who followed later with another teacher, told physicist James McDonald in 1967, “We were never sure at any stage that it was anything but airborne.” The Journal’s first report added a line that would grow: “several children who saw the object collapsed and became ill with fright.” In the version former students now tell, one girl reached the clearing ahead of everyone, was found dazed and hysterical, collapsed into a teacher’s arms, left the oval in an ambulance, and never came back to school. Researcher Bill Chalker was already calling these “persistent stories” in 1996. No ambulance or hospital record has been found, and one classmate has said he put her disappearance down to “her wild ways,” not the saucer.

### Circles in the grass

Joy Tighe’s form records “flattened waist high grass for 10 yds diameter 600 yds from school.” Judith Magee of the flying saucer society walked The Grange on Good Friday and found “a couple of circular patches where the grass had been flattened,” while allowing that strong wind could do the same. Norman Bury, writing in 1990, remembered a circle at least thirty feet across, the stalks twisted anticlockwise, with wheel marks running up to it. Others recall several rings, a scorched rim, and, a day or so later, the whole paddock burned off—by the authorities in the students’ telling, by the farmer in his own. Greenwood went looking for the sort of saucer “nest” then turning up in UFO stories and found nothing.

### Silence at the assembly

Headmaster Frank Samblebe had not seen it and did not care to. At lunchtime he called a special assembly where, in Greenwood’s words, he “told them what a whole lot of rot the whole thing had been, some people will believe anything.” Samblebe “runs his school on the book,” Greenwood explained, and “there’s no UFO sightings in the book.” The Dandenong Journal arrived to find staff and students told to “talk to no-one” and ran the headline “Flying Saucer Mystery: School Silent.” Children whispered to its columnist, “The head master said we are not to say anything.” Magee noted that some had been given detention for speaking to the press, and two former students remember a Channel 9 interview that a policeman broke up; the footage has never been found. A friend of Greenwood’s reported at the time that the headmaster had been too frightened to go outside and had told the visiting Air Force men to go jump in the lake. Samblebe’s only public statement, a month on, was that he could hardly comment on something he did not see, and that phone calls “from the Air Force down to the Flying Saucer Association” were interrupting the children’s studies.

### The men in suits

The cover-up entered the record slowly. In 1966 the Journal noted a report of military personnel at The Grange on the Saturday; an Army spokesman had no record of it. By 1990, former students were writing of soldiers photographing the paddock under lights and of a teacher’s camera being taken, one adding, “I didn’t see any of this myself.” In 1996 Chalker recorded a teacher allegedly told to hand over film and keep quiet to keep teaching. He marked it “no confirmation”; witnesses say the camera was Greenwood’s, and Greenwood said it was not. Shane Ryan, who has traced former students since 2005, counts twenty-four who recall police or military on the day, some placing men in dark suits beside Samblebe at the assembly. Around 2008 Greenwood himself told Ryan that two RAAF officers had come to his home, invoked the Official Secrets Act, and promised to paint him as a drunk. In 1967, asked on tape whether officials had leaned on him, his answer had been “Oh, no, no”—though he did say someone had accused him of having a hangover. David Halperin, who has studied the recording, suspects that someone was the headmaster. Tania Vassie says she was taken to meet men she did not know who suggested she had seen a weather balloon, and that she then told nobody, not even her mother, for fifty years.

### Balloons and a towed target

The Age had an answer on its page six the next morning: “Object perhaps balloon.” The Weather Bureau had released one from Laverton at 8:30, and a westerly could have carried it over Clayton. In 2014 researcher Keith Basterfield proposed something bigger. Project HIBAL, a joint Australian–American program sampling fallout in the stratosphere, flew vast silvery balloons out of Mildura with a 200-kilogram payload that was cut down by radio from a chase plane and came to earth over an hour beneath a twelve-meter parachute, to be collected by Department of Supply crews in trucks—an explanation with silver shapes, a circling aircraft, and officials in a paddock all built in. Flight 292 was scheduled for April 5, and launches often slipped a day. The chase pilot’s logbook has entries for flights 291 and 293 and nothing for 292, and the file series that should hold the rest was destroyed by the Department of Defence in 1996. HIBAL veteran John Sutcliffe told the ABC in 2026 that no HIBAL balloon had anything to do with Westall. A third idea arrived by letter to the Journal three weeks after the event, signed “Ex RAAF navigator 436150, Dandenong”: a silk or nylon target drogue, with the first plane towing and the other four practising on it, “probably with camera guns.” No exercise record has surfaced.

### The morning becomes memory

For forty years Westall lived almost nowhere but in the people who had been on the oval. Ryan’s search changed that: he has now reached 142 people who saw something in the sky and 197 who saw marks on the ground. The first reunion was held at the Westall tennis club in 2006. Rosie Jones’s documentary Westall ’66: A Suburban UFO Mystery followed in 2010, with Ryan as its on-screen investigator, and in December 2013 the City of Kingston opened a $300,000 flying-saucer playground at The Grange. The witnesses gathered there again on the sixtieth anniversary in April 2026. Joy Tighe, now Joy Clarke, told the ABC what she says to people who explain it all to her: “I have one question. Were you there? And they all say no.”

### What remains over Westall

It was broad daylight in the suburbs of a major city, with hundreds of witnesses and a posse of aircraft, and yet there is no photograph, no pilot, no flight plan, and no file. Something silver was over the school; on that much a twelve-year-old’s form, a skeptical science teacher, and two local newspapers agree. If it was a balloon, whose was it, and why did its owners say nothing while a school tore itself apart? If the planes were chasing a drogue, where are the five pilots? And what became of the girl who got to The Grange first?

## The evidence

### The contemporary paper trail

The early record is The Age’s April 7 item, Joy Tighe’s April 7 report form, the Dandenong Journal’s front pages of April 14 and 21 and its follow-up columns, a student account first printed in a primary-school newsletter and reprinted in the Australian Flying Saucer Review that winter, and Jim Kibel’s mid-1966 audio letter. They show that the sighting, the aircraft, the grass, children ill with fright, and a school told to keep quiet were all being discussed within days, not invented decades later. They also disagree from the start about the time, the number of objects, their shape, and whether there was any sound.

### The Greenwood tape

James McDonald recorded Andrew Greenwood on June 28, 1967, fourteen months after the event. It is the only long account by an adult witness made before the story was famous. Greenwood describes an airborne silver-grey object, rapid movements, up to five aircraft, a furious headmaster, and his own fruitless search of The Grange. He knew students said it had landed and doubted it. Parts of his timeline are hard to square with the calendar—he has Air Force visitors at the school two or three days later, when term had ended and Easter begun—and his later account of being threatened at home is absent from it.

### Sixty-year-old memories

The landing, the hysterical girl, the suited men, the confiscated camera, the soldiers with instruments, and the burned paddock rest mainly on recollections gathered from the 1990s onward. Some have early anchors, such as the Journal’s collapsing children and its report of military personnel. Others grew: even veteran ufologist Paul Norman felt obliged in 2000 to deny stories of occupants seen in a dome. The 2026 ABC program itself turned up a contradiction, with former teacher Claude Miller saying he missed the object while on a tea break, where Greenwood in 1967 had him seeing the end of it.

### What the grass cannot prove

Reports of the ground marks conflict on number, size, swirl, and scorching. No sample, measurement, or authenticated photograph survives, and the one experienced investigator who saw them within two days thought wind a possible cause.

### Records searched and records missing

Researchers have combed Royal Australian Air Force, Department of Civil Aviation, Department of Supply, and National Archives holdings without finding a Westall investigation file; a 2022 review of newly opened Supply files found nothing relevant. The series expected to hold detailed HIBAL flight records was destroyed in 1996. The gap cuts both ways: it prevents anyone from placing a balloon over Clayton South, and it prevents anyone from ruling one out.

### Classification

This file is classified as an unresolved daylight mass-witness encounter with disputed conventional explanations. A Laverton weather balloon, a HIBAL flight, or a towed target could each account for part of the scene, and skeptics and researchers still argue over which way the wind was blowing. No surviving record ties any of them to Westall.
