## The story

### A voice on the company radio

Late on a wet, gray Tuesday afternoon, a United Airlines ramp employee helping push an aircraft from Gate C17 looked almost straight up. He reported a round object hanging beneath O’Hare’s low overcast and called the airline operations center. The message spread across the company frequency. Mechanics, supervisors, and pilots in different parts of the airport began looking above Concourse C, turning a routine pushback into one of modern UFO lore’s strangest workplace incidents.

### Dark gray, silent, and hard to size

Witness descriptions converged on a dark gray or metallic-looking disc with no lights and no sound. Estimates printed by the Chicago Tribune ranged from six to twenty-four feet across, but nobody knew its distance well enough to measure it. One ramp witness said it rotated “pretty fast”; a taxi mechanic viewing it obliquely thought it was stationary and hazy underneath. Those differences matter. The surviving testimony supports a small, conspicuous shape against cloud, not one agreed set of dimensions or mechanical details.

### The pilots open their windows

The first employee said he alerted the flight crew beside him and that one or both pilots opened the cockpit windows to look. A manager heard the radio call, ran outside, and later said the possibility of even a loose balloon near flight operations demanded attention. Elsewhere, two mechanics taxiing an empty Boeing 777 heard the chatter and saw a dark round form above the terminal. The identities of most airline witnesses were withheld because they feared professional consequences, leaving their occupations and vantage points better documented than their names.

### The clock refuses to behave

Even the time is a mystery inside the mystery. Contemporary reports place the main sighting around 4:15–4:30 p.m.; individual durations range from roughly two minutes to much longer. The certified ground-control recording reproduced by NARCAP appears to mention a UFO at 3:58 p.m., while telephone calls from the United ramp tower are logged around 4:30, 4:47, and 4:52. The FAA facility record enters the report at 4:45 and closes its quality-assurance item at 5:03. NARCAP could not reconcile the recording clocks, witness estimates, and log times, so a minute-by-minute narrative would claim precision the archive does not possess.

### “Did you see a flying disc out by C17?”

The most durable piece of the case is not an image but a telephone exchange. On a certified FAA recording, a United ramp controller named Sue asks the O’Hare tower whether anyone saw a flying disc by C17. The controller laughs, asks whether United is celebrating Christmas early, then says he has seen nothing and will keep watch. A later caller reports that pilots on the ground are describing a UFO about a thousand feet up. The joking tone became part of the lore, but the tapes also establish that the report reached federal air-traffic personnel that afternoon.

### The hole in Chicago’s ceiling

The detail that made O’Hare unforgettable came at the end. Several witnesses said the object accelerated upward through the cloud deck. The taxi mechanic did not claim to watch that departure; after parking the 777, he noticed an almost perfect circular opening where the object had been and watched it fade within minutes. Other accounts described blue sky through a clean-edged gap. A management witness, however, remembered the object zipping east before disappearing. The famous vertical exit and cloud hole are therefore multiply reported, but not universal across every account.

### No tower sighting, no confirmed track

No O’Hare tower controller reported seeing the object, and the FAA’s initial radar check found nothing unusual. NARCAP later examined FAA primary-radar data and found no return at Gate C17 at the relevant time. A faint National Weather Service radar echo occupied a broad cell over the airport on one nearby scan, but the report itself emphasized that weather, birds, aircraft, buildings, or anomalous propagation could account for it. There is no defensible radar track showing a disc hovering and then climbing away.

### United knew nothing—until the record spoke

When Jon Hilkevitch began reporting, United said its duty-manager log contained no unusual entry and publicly professed no knowledge of the event. NPR summarized the same contradiction on January 1, 2007: employees said they had filed reports while the airline said it knew nothing. FAA records later reproduced in the NARCAP file contained the tower calls and a written facility-log entry. They prove that a report was made; they do not identify what prompted it or establish that management concealed physical evidence.

### Weather phenomenon—or two phenomena folded together?

FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said the agency would not investigate and offered a weather phenomenon, including airport lights reflecting from low cloud, as its working theory. Later coverage focused on a fallstreak or “hole-punch” cloud. The phenomenon is real: aircraft can seed ice in supercooled cloud droplets, creating an expanding circular or elliptical gap and a veil of falling crystals. That mechanism fits the reported opening better than it fits a small solid-looking disc observed below the cloud for minutes. No contemporaneous analysis demonstrated that a fallstreak formed over C17 at the reported time.

### Why the meteorology remains disputed

NARCAP argued that the lowest cloud layer was above freezing and therefore unsuitable for the ice process, but its vertical-temperature reconstruction relied partly on a sounding from Davenport, Iowa, roughly 140 miles away. Astronomer Mark Hammergren told later Tribune reporting that conditions were suitable for a hole-punch cloud. A skeptical review also notes the anonymous witnesses’ conflicting durations, motions, and size estimates. The ordinary explanation is physically credible yet case-specific proof is missing; the extraordinary explanation preserves the reported disc but has only testimony to support it.

### The pictures that never arrived

The FAA audio includes a claim that somebody obtained a picture. None with a verified chain of custody has entered the public record. NARCAP reviewed purported O’Hare photographs circulating online and identified manipulated airport images, while at least one primary witness rejected them as the wrong object, place, or scale. The crowded airport setting makes the absence of authenticated imagery frustrating, but an alleged photograph is not evidence until its original file, photographer, time, and location can be established.

### A million readers find Gate C17

Hilkevitch’s New Year’s Day story carried the encounter out of employee radio traffic and into international news. NARCAP recorded more than a million page views and called it the Tribune website’s most-read article at the time; NPR interviewed Hilkevitch the same day. The case endured because its stage was so ordinary and so controlled: not a lonely road, but mechanics and pilots on duty beneath the windows of one of the world’s busiest airports. The central image—an uninvited disc above an occupied gate—made disbelief feel briefly like an operational problem.

### What remains above Gate C17

The archive supports a narrow but compelling conclusion. Multiple airline employees reported an unidentified shape over Concourse C; company radio traffic spread the alarm; United personnel called the FAA tower; controllers saw no object and radar supplied no confirmed track. Witnesses later disagreed about timing, duration, motion, rotation, and the exact departure. A fallstreak hole can explain a circular break in cloud, but it does not by itself reconstruct the hovering disc they described. O’Hare remains an unresolved witness event, not verified exotic technology—and not merely a story invented after the fact.

## The evidence

### The official documentary core

Two forms of FAA evidence survive through the FOIA material reproduced by NARCAP: certified voice recordings and the tower’s Daily Record of Facility Operation. They independently establish calls about a “flying disc” near Gate C17 and an official log entry at 4:45 p.m. The records do not say a controller saw it, do not describe a radar confirmation, and do not endorse the witnesses’ interpretation.

### First-person reports with protected identities

Two reports reached the National UFO Reporting Center within fourteen days of the event, before the Tribune story. One came from a disguised airline manager; another from a taxi mechanic. Their accounts overlap on a dark round object above Concourse C and immediate workplace radio discussion, but disagree on duration and departure. Because the names remain private, readers cannot independently examine employment records or interview histories.

A bird? A plane? A … UFO?](<https://www.chicagotribune.com/2007/01/01/in-the-sky-a-bird-a-plane-a-ufo/>)

### What the instruments did not preserve

There is no authenticated photograph or video, no continuous radar track, no recovered material, no measured cloud sample, and no publicly released United incident file. The reported altitude and diameter depend on visual estimates without a known distance. The strongest instrument evidence documents the reporting process, not the object itself.

### A serious alternative with an incomplete match

Fallstreak holes are documented atmospheric features created when aircraft introduce ice into supercooled cloud layers. Their circular gaps can look startlingly artificial and directly address the case’s signature cloud opening. The hypothesis is limited by the witnesses’ claim that they first watched a bounded object below the overcast and by the lack of a preserved meteorological reconstruction proving the required cloud phase at Gate C17. It remains the strongest developed conventional explanation, not a demonstrated identification.

### Classification

This file is classified as an unresolved multi-witness airport encounter with a documented report to air-traffic control and an unverified cloud disturbance. “Unresolved” reflects the missing imagery, inconsistent chronology, anonymous testimony, and absence of a confirmed radar target. It does not certify the reported object as a craft, an aviation threat, or extraterrestrial. The case’s secure center is that airline professionals reported something unusual in controlled airspace and the available official response did not determine what they saw.
