Aerospace entrepreneur & research patron

A real-estate entrepreneur who financed expandable space habitats and private investigations of UFOs and other unusual phenomena. His organizations connect the history of Skinwalker Ranch with a documented Defense Intelligence Agency research contract.

## An entrepreneur funding two different pursuits

Bigelow built his wealth in real-estate development and used it to support projects in aerospace and the study of unusual phenomena. His company biography dates his personal funding of Bigelow Aerospace to 1999 and describes an engineering business focused on habitable structures for space. In UFO history, his distinctive role is as a patron and organizer: he could purchase a research location, hire specialists, and sustain investigations over years. The commercial spacecraft work and the paranormal investigations nevertheless have separate records and different kinds of results.

## Space hardware with a documented flight history

Bigelow Aerospace developed the Genesis I and II spacecraft and the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, or BEAM. NASA installed BEAM on the International Space Station on April 16, 2016. The experiment tested a compact structure that could expand in orbit, with evaluation of its performance and protection against the space environment. This is a concrete engineering achievement documented in mission records. It helps explain Bigelow’s visibility beyond UFO circles, while providing no automatic validation of claims about recovered craft or extraterrestrial visitors.

## NIDS and the Utah ranch

Bigelow established the National Institute for Discovery Science in 1995 and purchased the Sherman family’s Utah ranch the following year. NIDS investigated reports of unusual aerial activity, animal deaths, and other experiences there. A 1998 Deseret News interview is especially useful because it predates the later books and television series: Bigelow described the research but declined to disclose specific incidents and said conclusions were premature. The article documents the existence and aims of the effort, alongside claims by its participants about what they were investigating.

## BAASS and the defense research contract

A later organization, Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, or BAASS, received a Defense Intelligence Agency contract associated with AAWSAP. A released May 2009 DIA talking paper records that BAASS was the sole bidder and that the contract was signed on September 22, 2008. It lists research areas including propulsion, materials, power generation, and human effects, and describes planned technical reports. This primary record establishes a real government-contractor relationship. It does not, by itself, establish that paranormal events occurred at the ranch or that the contractor possessed extraterrestrial technology.

## Personal conviction and consciousness research

In a 2017 interview with 60 Minutes, Bigelow said he believed extraterrestrial visitors were already present on Earth. His interests also extend to claims about consciousness surviving death. He founded the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies in 2020 to support research into that question and the proposed nature of an afterlife. These pursuits show the breadth of his curiosity and willingness to fund unconventional subjects. They describe his convictions and institutional goals; assessing a particular finding still requires access to its methods, evidence, and independent scrutiny.
