Holiday confusion had sent them first toward Cleveland and then New Caney looking for a bingo game; finding none, they ate at a truck-stop restaurant near U.S. 59 and FM 1485. In the account Cash gave Air Force claims officers eight months later, they started home around 8:30 p.m. and had gone perhaps twelve miles when a light beyond the pines stopped looking like ordinary traffic in the sky. Cash could not risk the rain-softened shoulder and stopped. The three later described a brilliant mass larger than the car, with fire or a cone of light pulsing from below. Each pulse brought a roaring or whooshing sound and seemed to lift it; between pulses it sagged toward the road. The famous upright-diamond outline became clearest in later drawings. Her Christian frame for the impossible scene was immediate: she reassured Colby that the light might be Jesus and would not hurt them. Cash walked toward the front of the Oldsmobile and remained outside longest, transfixed but increasingly overwhelmed by brightness and heat. She told the officers that the metal door handle had become too painful to grasp, so she wrapped the pocket of her leather jacket around it. Inside, the witnesses said the cabin was so hot they switched from the heater to air conditioning. Farther down the road they stopped again and counted moving silhouettes—Cash settled on twenty-three; Vickie sometimes gave twenty-six and acknowledged that circling aircraft might have been counted twice. They described both single-rotor machines and tandem-rotor forms later associated with Army CH-47 Chinooks. At Bergstrom, Cash said she had seen United States Air Force wording; Vickie carefully said she had seen no marking. Their first investigator’s notes recorded ordinary main-and-tail-rotor helicopters rather than a uniform fleet of Chinooks. Her condition worsened until she entered Parkway Hospital on January 3, remaining there for nearly two weeks and returning later. Vickie and Colby described milder stomach, eye, skin and hair symptoms. The suffering and hospital treatment are central facts of their subsequent lives; the diagnosis is not. The witnesses said embarrassment and fear of ridicule kept the story close while Cash was ill. Near the end of January, Vickie told Dayton police chief Tommy Waring; on February 2 she reached the National UFO Reporting Center, and the account moved through APRO and tabloid coverage. McDonnell Douglas engineer and MUFON deputy director John Schuessler learned of it from a Conroe Courier reporter on February 20. Vickie led Schuessler and Alan Holt along FM 1485, where their notes record three viewing locations but no trace. At Bergstrom the adults could not place the event on the available map and disagreed over the county. In September, Texas radiation official Charles R. Meyer searched the general roadway because the exact spot remained uncertain. Administrative demands sought $10 million for Cash and $5 million each for Vickie and Colby; after the Air Force denied them, the witnesses sued. Agency declarations said the Army, Navy, Air Force and NASA possessed no aircraft matching the fiery object, while no evidence placed federal helicopters over FM 1485. Their August 1981 taped Air Force interview is unusually valuable direct testimony. The record also preserves friction: who first saw the light, whether the engine stopped by itself, when helicopters appeared, their number and markings, and how clearly the object’s shape could be seen. Those changes do not prove invention, but they prevent later polished versions from being treated as a single contemporaneous statement.
