From polluted water to unexplained carcasses
Howe trained in communication at Stanford and worked in television documentary production before becoming a familiar UFO voice. Her environmental reporting addressed smog, energy, and contaminated water. At Denver’s KMGH-TV, the shift toward animal mutilations grew out of that reporting career. Her own biography dates the investigation’s start to September 1979: a television journalist taking a camera into ranch country, where owners and law enforcement described deaths they believed ordinary predation could not explain.

A Strange Harvest
The resulting ninety-minute documentary aired on May 25, 1980, and earned a regional Emmy. Howe reported missing eyes and tissue, seemingly precise wounds, little visible blood, and absent tracks. Her account of filming near Walsenburg centers on a rancher’s prize bull with a circular area of hide removed around an eye. Some interviewees attributed such deaths to extraterrestrials. The unsettling power lay in recognizable animals and grieving or bewildered owners; the leap from wounds to an alien perpetrator remained an interpretation.

The official file beside the film
The FBI’s archive places the controversy in the western and midwestern United States of the 1970s. Its introduction emphasizes a limitation often lost in retellings: the bureau generally lacked jurisdiction, with an exception for incidents on tribal lands. A file of reports, requests, and investigative correspondence is not an FBI endorsement of alien involvement. Read beside Howe’s work, it opens a second story about frustrated ranchers, competing explanations, and what different agencies were actually authorized to investigate.

The footage Richard Doty promised
In 1983 Howe was developing a UFO documentary for HBO. According to her account, Air Force special investigations agent Richard Doty met her at Kirtland and showed her a purported briefing describing crashed craft and extraterrestrials. There were promises of extraordinary film material, including a landing at Holloman Air Force Base. The promised footage did not arrive. The episode later became part of Mirage Men’s examination of UFO disinformation. It is a revealing twist: the journalist seeking a decisive government source became a subject in a story about the manipulation of researchers.

An expanding collection of mysteries
An Alien Harvest appeared in 1989. Howe’s interests also extended to crop formations and military or intelligence testimony, while radio and Earthfiles carried her work to audiences beyond television. Earthfiles indexes reports from 1998 onward, giving readers a way to follow claims as they developed over time. That chronology matters: an initial interview, a later elaboration, and an independent finding are different kinds of material, even when they are collected under the same enduring mystery.
From ranch country to Antarctic claims
Her later documentary Antarctica: Alien Secrets Beneath the Ice presents accounts attributed to purported military insiders about structures under Antarctic ice. The move from damaged cattle to hidden architecture shows how far her reporting’s subject matter expanded. Such films document the claims being presented, but do not themselves authenticate the speakers’ histories or the alleged sites. Howe’s place in UFO lore lies in that long chain of interviews, broadcasts, and extraordinary promises—and in the continuing argument over how much weight each link can bear.
