Utsuro-bune: The Woman in the Hollow Boat

In 1803, the story goes, fishermen on the coast of Hitachi towed ashore a round vessel glazed above and banded with iron below. Inside sat a woman nobody could understand, unreadable symbols, and a box she would not let anyone touch. An elder guessed it held her lover’s head. The villagers pushed her back out to sea. The manuscript drawings look uncannily like flying saucers, and new ones keep turning up in Japanese archives.

The Saucer That Joined Mainbrace

In September 1952 NATO filled the North Sea with ships for Mainbrace, and an uninvited visitor turned up in the reports. Aircrews in Yorkshire saw a silver disc trail a Meteor jet and swing down like a falling sycamore leaf; a photographer on a carrier photographed a round object rising over the flight deck. An RAF officer later said these sightings made the RAF officially recognize the UFO.

A Fragment from a Flying Disc

In September 1957 a Rio gossip columnist printed a letter from an admirer who said a flying disc had exploded over a beach at Ubatuba; folded inside were bits of a metal so light it seemed like paper. A doctor took them to a government lab, which found magnesium with no impurities at all. The pieces went on to the Condon Committee, Dow Chemical, MIT, Stanford and a clean room in Texas. Nobody ever found the man who wrote the letter.

The Burning Grid at Falcon Lake

In 1967 a Winnipeg mechanic prospecting for quartz watched a glowing red craft land on the rock and open a door. He called in to the “Yankee boys” he assumed were inside and got only a hum. When he touched the hull his glove melted, and a grid of holes blasted hot gas into his chest. He walked out of the bush with a checkerboard of burns and a story that reached Parliament. Canada still lists the case as unsolved.

The Saucer over the Baciu Forest

On a Sunday in August 1968 a technician named Emil Barnea photographed a silvery disc tumbling over the woods at the edge of Cluj, and the Communist state’s own news agency put the pictures in papers across the country. The engineer who championed them told Western readers they were among the best ever taken. But Barnea’s first account, given by telephone in 1968, differed in almost every circumstance from the dramatic picnic scene the West later read, and turned upside down, the second disc looks almost exactly like the first.

The Lights beside the Newspaper Plane

In December 1978 Wellington radar asked a freight crew hauling newspapers down the Kaikōura coast to identify a strong return off its wing, and the pilots saw a bright orb. Ten days later a television crew rode the same run and filmed a glowing oval while the controller called out targets “in formation with you.” The government put a jet on standby. Scientists answered with squid boats and a torch shone through the cockpit window.

The Last Call over Bass Strait

Alone over Bass Strait at dusk in October 1978, twenty-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich radioed that something with four lights was playing games with his Cessna. “It’s not an aircraft,” he said, then described a long shiny shape with a green light hovering over him. His engine began to cough, and then came seventeen seconds of open microphone, and nothing. The official finding, four years on, was one sentence: cause not determined.

The Spheres in Dechmont Woods

One November morning in 1979, a forestry foreman walking his dog in a Livingston plantation met a hovering gray dome and two spiked spheres that rolled up and seized him by the trousers. He woke with no voice and crawled to his truck. Police treated it as an assault, measured forty holes in the grass and sent the trousers to the forensic lab, which found them torn as if pulled upward while worn. Bob Taylor never changed a word.

PC Alan Godfrey and the Todmorden Encounter

At about ten past five on a wet November morning in 1980, a Todmorden constable hunting for stray cows saw what he took for a bus, then a spinning, windowed thing as wide as the road, hovering five feet above it. He was sketching it when he found himself a hundred yards farther on, the object gone and minutes missing. Five months earlier he had been among the first officers called to a dead man named Adamski, lying on top of a coal heap.

The Disc over O’Hare

One afternoon in 2006, a ramp worker at Gate C17 looked up to see a dark disc hanging just under the overcast. Pilots came out to watch; a United dispatcher phoned the tower about a flying disc, and the controller asked whether United was celebrating Christmas early. Then the disc shot straight up through the cloud and left a clean round hole in Chicago’s sky. The FAA blamed the weather. Not one witness has ever given a name.

The Alderney Lights

On an April afternoon in 2007 the captain of a yellow Trislander bound for Alderney watched two sharp-edged cigars of golden light hang over the sea for twelve minutes, each with a dark band two-thirds of the way along. His passengers saw them; a pilot descending toward Jersey saw one from the other side; Jersey radar had a lone echo near the Casquets. Four investigators spent 181 pages on it and could not say what it was.

The Yellow Spheres of Ladakh

In 2012 border police in Ladakh logged more than a hundred yellowish spheres that lifted off the horizon on the Chinese side and drifted for hours. They were raised in Parliament, and at a border meeting where the Chinese side laughed. Then two astronomers had soldiers measure them with a theodolite, and the readings matched Jupiter. The government never said whether it accepted the planet.

The Heat Signature over Aguadilla

In April 2013 a Customs and Border Protection plane climbing out of Aguadilla swung its infrared camera onto a dark heat signature. For nearly four minutes it seemed to race over rooftops, dive into the Atlantic without a splash, surface, and split in two. The Pentagon later rebuilt the flight path and put a pair of sky lanterns over the airport instead. Everything turns on whether a smudge passed behind a telephone pole.

The Fleet Behind the Gimbal

In 2014 Navy pilots off Virginia began seeing objects on their new radar nearly every day. One described a dark cube inside a clear sphere passing within fifty feet of his jet. In January 2015 an infrared pod caught a dark oblong that seemed to roll on its edge while a voice said, “There’s a whole fleet of them.” Skeptics say the roll belongs to the camera. The radar tapes that showed the fleet have never been released.
